The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the answers for the multiple-choice subjects of the 2023 high school graduation exam, in the context of the controversy over the English exam that has yet to "cool down". However, contrary to the expectations of many candidates and teachers that the Ministry of Education and Training would recognize and grade both controversial answers, 'distinctive' (B) and 'comparative' (C), the only option chosen was 'distinctive' and there was no further explanation.
High school graduation English exam causes controversy
Before this decision from the Ministry of Education and Training, many candidates, although assessing this as an appropriate move, also hoped to receive a clear explanation to know where they went wrong, especially when experts are having conflicting opinions about the answer and have not yet reached a final consensus.
For example, Nguyen Thi Thuy Nghi, a student at Xuyen Moc High School (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province), said she immediately chose the answer 'comparative' without much thought, "because 'comparison group' is a fixed term used in experiments that my teacher emphasized when I was preparing for the IELTS test".
"I thought I had 'hit the jackpot' until the Ministry of Education and Training announced the answer was 'distinctive'. About half of my classmates also chose wrongly like me," the female student said.

For that reason, Nghi hopes that for this controversial question, the Ministry of Education and Training will explain why it chose 'distinctive' instead of 'comparative'. "If the correct answer from the beginning was 'distinctive', and 'comparative' was just accidentally correct, then I hope the Ministry of Education and Training will recognize both answers," Nghi stated.
Truong Tran Mai Anh, a student at Tran Khai Nguyen High School (HCMC), said that she chose the answer 'control', which is completely 'out of tune' with the recent controversy. "With the latest move by the Ministry of Education and Training, I think it is reasonable but it is highly unlikely to resolve the questions of the candidates who chose the wrong answer. The Ministry needs to have a more specific explanation," the female student shared.
Similarly, Dang Phan Hong Anh, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), also chose an answer unrelated to the controversy, 'pioneering'. "However, this is a matter of great concern, so the Ministry of Education and Training announcing the answer without further explanation is somewhat unfair to the candidates who chose wrongly. I hope they will be given encouragement points," Hong Anh stated.
Many social media accounts debated the controversial English exam question.
Sharing the same opinion, LVH, who studies at the same school, hopes that the Ministry of Education and Training can consider calculating points for the choices that are considered correct, or at least have a clear "decoding" of the exam questions so that candidates are "convinced" and no longer have too many concerns like now.
"If you get this controversial question wrong, you will lose 0.2 points, which means you may fail your favorite wish after 12 years of hard work. This will be an even bigger regret if the question you choose is correct according to the expert's opinion, but deviates from the official answer," the male student said.
