Hanoi Woman, 43 years old, often bathes and washes her hair in the evening, recently has blurred vision, doctor diagnosed acute migraine.
The patient works at a bank and often comes home late, so he has a habit of bathing and washing his hair late, sometimes at 11pm. On October 1, Dr. Mai Thi Anh Thu, Head of the Examination Department of Hanoi Eye Hospital 2, said that the posture of continuously bowing the head for 15-20 minutes in the evening to wash the hair, combined with anxiety and stress for a long time, is the cause of the patient's acute migraine.
At night, intraocular pressure (pressure in the eye) is higher than normal, so the lower the patient bends down for a long time, the more pressure is put on the front of the eye, the doctor explained. It can increase suddenly, leading to an acute migraine (acute glaucoma attack), especially if there is a family history of migraines, or the patient is farsighted, or is over 40 years old. Women are at higher risk of acute migraine attacks than men.
"If not treated early, the disease damages the optic nerve and can cause permanent vision loss," said Dr. Thu.

Glaucoma, also known as glaucoma, usually occurs in middle-aged people. Some cases are children and young people can also get the disease. This disease ranks second among the causes of blindness, after cataracts.
The cause of glaucoma is still unknown. Acute glaucoma attacks often start suddenly at night, when the patient is reading or during strong emotions. Chronic glaucoma is often discovered during routine eye examinations or examinations for other eye diseases. Therefore, chronic glaucoma is often discovered late, when the disease has progressed severely.
Treatment of glaucoma aims to slow the progression of the disease and limit damage to the optic nerve. Depending on the stage of the disease, treatment may include medication, laser, or surgery.
Doctor Thu said that if someone in the family has migraines, other members should have regular eye exams to detect the disease in time, not wait until symptoms appear to go for an examination. People with farsightedness, high blood pressure, diabetes, and middle-aged people should have regular checkups.
People who have suffered from migraines need to see a doctor regularly to control the progression of the disease. Never buy eye drops or abuse drugs without a doctor's prescription. Prolonged use of corticosteroids can cause migraines.
Most patients with chronic glaucoma have initially unclear symptoms that are easily overlooked. When the disease has progressed, vision is significantly reduced or the disease is only discovered when going to the doctor. Therefore, as soon as there are any unusual signs in the eyes, patients should immediately go to a specialized medical facility for timely diagnosis and treatment.
