Ho Chi Minh City – Six years after receiving the Vanci skin robot, Binh Dan Hospital collaborated with the supplier to provide on-the-job training for five surgeons, who subsequently received international certifications.
This information was provided by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Vinh Hung, Director of Binh Dan Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), at the National Conference on Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery, jointly organized by the Vietnam Society of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery (VASEL) and Binh Dinh Provincial General Hospital on December 8th and 9th.
Currently, the hospital is collaborating on training three additional surgical teams to supplement the existing 23 teams, including 12 general surgery teams and 11 urology teams. Previously, doctors had to go to South Korea or the United States for training.
Along with that, robotic surgery has also gained more acceptance from patients. In 2017, the hospital performed only 243 cases, nearly doubling that number to 463 cases this year.
"Previously, a surgery lasted 6-7 hours, but now it only takes 1.5 to 4 hours," Dr. Hung said.
Binh Dan Hospital is the first institution to implement robotic surgery for adults. Robotic surgery has advantages thanks to 3D imaging, high magnification, good analysis of confined areas, and preservation of organ function, bringing benefits to patients, Mr. Hung said.

The expert also predicted that in the future, the Asia -Pacific region will be a boom area for the application of robotic surgery. To catch up with world medicine, Vietnam needs to train human resources, strengthen cooperation and exchange with the global medical community, and invest in more robotic systems, endoscopy, and interventional procedures... using investment budgets and stimulus loans.
According to the Organizing Committee, the National Conference on Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery is an annual event organized by the Vietnam Society of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery. The conference is a prestigious scientific forum attracting the participation of numerous professors, associate professors, doctors, nurses, healthcare managers, and leaders from military and civilian medical facilities nationwide. This year, a highlight is the abundance of presentations and video screenings, along with the application of information technology, artificial intelligence, and robotics in the medical field.
"This is an opportunity for colleagues nationwide to meet, exchange scientific knowledge and experience in professional practice to supplement and enhance applied knowledge in professional practice, opening up new prospects for medicine in our country," said Professor Tran Binh Giang, President of the Vietnam Society of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery.
On this occasion, the Vietnam Society of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery received the Third-Class Labor Medal.
