Doctors at the Center for Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital (Hospital 108) have just created a "copy" of the penis for a male patient (36 years old, in Hanoi) who had his penis amputated due to cancer.
According to this patient, 5 years ago, his "little guy" often had discharge and ulcers, but he only treated it himself because he thought it was a common infection. However, when he went to the hospital for examination, he was informed that the cancer had metastasized and he had to remove all of his genitals including: penis, scrotum, testicles... then undergo radiation therapy.
The surgery also removed the foreskin, a sensitive part that senses sexual function. At the same time, when urinating, there will be leakage because the urethra can no longer open and close normally. His quality of life has been severely reduced due to inconveniences in personal activities, and his sex life cannot be maintained.
Many patients with penis defects were given new ones by Hospital 108.
The patient was admitted to Hospital 108 last July. Doctors consulted and performed surgery to create a new penis, correcting the defects the patient encountered.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ngoc Lam, Director of the Center for Craniofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery, Hospital 108, said that creating a penis using microsurgical fat flaps is one of the most complicated techniques, because many other steps must be performed in the same surgery. The purpose of the surgery is to create a new penis that has the same shape as a real penis and, more importantly, must be able to perform urinary and reproductive functions.
For the above male patient, the surgical team used a skin flap from the forearm to reconstruct the entire penis, urethra, and glans. The hardness of the penis was created using autologous rib cartilage.
More than a month after surgery, the patient's health was stable. Two weeks after surgery, Mr. T. was able to stand up to urinate, something he had not been able to do for the past five years.
According to Hospital 108, the method of penis reconstruction has been implemented by the hospital for many years in the treatment of cases of congenital penis defects or household accidents, cancer, etc. This defect greatly affects the patient's quality of life, infertility due to the inability to have normal sexual relations. After surgery, the patient can have an almost normal life: standing up to urinate, can have sex and have children naturally.
