On May 30, information from Cam Khe District Medical Center (Phu Tho) said that this unit had just admitted a 3-year-old girl (residing in Xuan An, Yen Lap) to the hospital in a serious infection due to chickenpox.

At the time of admission, the child was conscious, had a high fever, and lesions appeared all over the body, alternating between the clear fluid-filled blisters were the cloudy fluid-filled blisters, many ruptured locations left behind pus or crusts.

In particular, the child's tongue and oral cavity had many ulcers, covered by pseudomembranes, making it impossible for the child to eat or drink. Tests for the virus (EV71) that causes hand, foot and mouth disease were negative.

After examination and testing, the doctor diagnosed chickenpox with secondary infection and prescribed antibiotics to fight infection, reduce fever, improve resistance, clean skin lesions, and take care of the child's teeth.

Dr. Nguyen Van Huynh - Deputy Head of Pediatrics Department, Cam Khe District Medical Center said that this was a case of severe secondary infection, so doctors ordered the patient to be hospitalized for monitoring and treatment.

Do not be subjective with chickenpox

According to doctors, chickenpox is an acute infectious disease caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, belonging to the Herpesviridae family. Symptoms of chickenpox include fever, aches, loss of appetite, headache, muscle pain, accompanied by red rash and blisters on the skin and mucous membranes (mouth, eyes, urinary tract, ...).

Chickenpox is transmitted directly from person to person through respiratory droplets (saliva, nasal secretions) when a chickenpox patient coughs, sneezes, or talks. In addition, the disease can be transmitted through direct contact with chickenpox blisters, or indirectly through handling objects contaminated with blister secretions.

According to doctors, chickenpox is usually benign, but in infants, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, the disease is at risk of becoming severe and causing complications.

The disease usually progresses benignly and patients usually recover completely. However, chickenpox infection in infants, pregnant women, immunocompromised people, or people taking immunosuppressive drugs are at risk of severe progression and complications.

The disease can cause dangerous complications such as: infected dermatitis; encephalitis, meningitis; pneumonia; otitis media; nephritis, glomerulonephritis; sepsis...

Therefore, experts recommend that when having symptoms of chickenpox, patients should go to a specialized medical facility for consultation and appropriate treatment. Most cases of chickenpox can be monitored and treated at home. However, if the patient belongs to a special group (infants, immunocompromised people) or has complications of chickenpox, they will be hospitalized for close monitoring and active treatment.
