GĐXH - The cause of anemia and iron deficiency in a 14-year-old patient was determined to be prolonged bleeding from a colon polyp for nearly a year.

Iron deficiency anemia is a common medical condition in children due to inadequate nutrition or chronic illness. However, a rare case occurred in a 14-year-old male patient being treated at Vinh Phuc General Hospital.

The male patient (14 years old, residing in Van Quan, Lap Thach) was thin and weak (weight 27 kg, height 120 cm), with many symptoms of fatigue, weakness and pallor.

The patient was diagnosed with severe iron deficiency anemia, the cause of which was determined to be prolonged bleeding from a colon polyp for nearly a year. What is special is that the child still maintained incredible endurance despite the hemoglobin index in the blood reaching only 9 g/dL - an extremely low level compared to the hemoglobin index in normal people (120-140 g/dL). This case was successfully treated, bringing hope to many other children.

At the hospital, the child was examined and assigned to perform tests, functional tests and diagnostic imaging to find the cause of iron deficiency anemia. In particular, the results of the gastrointestinal endoscopy showed that the child had a grade III colon polyp (about 3 cm in size). This was determined to be the cause of colon bleeding leading to severe iron deficiency anemia in the child.

Grade III colon polyps are usually polyps that have progressed significantly in size or growth and have the potential for dangerous complications such as damage to the colon mucosa, causing bleeding. This bleeding can be chronic bleeding with small amounts but lasting for a long time, leading to iron deficiency anemia, or can cause acute bleeding if the polyp ruptures or becomes infected. This continuous bleeding is the main cause of severe iron deficiency anemia in children. If not intervened promptly, it can lead to dangerous complications, even life-threatening.

To stop the bleeding, doctors performed a procedure to remove the polyps through endoscopy under gastrointestinal anesthesia. This is a minimally invasive method and is very suitable for children, helping to completely eliminate the cause of bleeding without the need for open abdominal surgery.

At the same time, the patient is treated with a regimen of iron supplements, vitamins B6, B9, B12 and a suitable diet to provide raw materials and stimulate bone marrow to regenerate blood for the body.

Sharing about the case of the child patient, Master. Doctor. Nguyen Quang Huy (Deputy Head of the Department of Gastroenterology) said: Before performing the endoscopic procedure on the child, we had a consultation with clinical hematology specialists and carefully studied the patient's blood test results.

It is worth mentioning that the child's bloody stools have been going on for about a year without being examined to find the cause, causing the disease to progress from acute to chronic. If not detected and treated promptly, the consequences will be extremely serious.

Through this, I also recommend that parents pay more attention to their children's nutrition and lifestyle and pay more attention to their children's health to detect abnormalities early and raise awareness in screening and regular general health check-ups for children.

Through the case of a 14-year-old boy with severe iron deficiency anemia due to colon polyps causing prolonged bleeding, successful treatment intervention has brought about a significant recovery for the child. To ensure successful treatment and prevent the risk of polyp recurrence, the child will be closely monitored through regular blood tests and colonoscopy after treatment.
