Ms. VTN (57 years old, residing in Xuan Loc district, Dong Nai province) started having symptoms of prolonged vaginal bleeding 3 months ago. However, she silently endured it and did not go to the doctor.
When the condition became serious, with increasing bleeding, she went to a medical facility for examination and treatment. There, she was initially diagnosed with vaginal cancer and was transferred to a specialized cancer hospital for treatment. This information made Ms. N. extremely worried.
At the cancer hospital, Ms. VTN underwent a biopsy and tests. However, due to the continuous bleeding, the examination was difficult. After nearly a month, she was diagnosed with a biopsy that ruled out cancerous lesions. Meanwhile, the bleeding continued, causing her to be exhausted, severely anemic, and weak. At this time, she was referred to Gia Dinh People's Hospital (HCMC).
At the hospital, the doctors ordered her to have an MRI. The results showed that she had pelvic and vulvar vascular malformations. At this time, due to prolonged blood loss, Ms. N. was pale and lifeless. A blood test showed that her Hb was low, so she had to receive 2 units of blood.
On January 24, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Luan, Head of the Interventional Radiology Unit, Deputy Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that when placing the speculum, he saw a bunch of twisted blood vessels in the left vaginal wall of Ms. N., purple like a bunch of grapes. After inserting the needle under the guidance of the X-ray background, the doctor saw the contrast agent spreading out exactly like a cluster of malformed veins, so he decided to perform sclerotherapy injection.
Thanks to accurate diagnosis and timely treatment, after 1 day, Ms. N's health recovered and she was discharged from the hospital.
The patient was discharged after 1 day of treatment.
Vascular malformations are rare diseases.
Dr. Bui Chi Thuong, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that currently, the world has only recorded 3-4 cases of pelvic vascular malformations and vulvar-vaginal malformations in young girls. Rare cases like Mrs. N. (57 years old) have not been found in world medical literature. However, with high determination, doctors have coordinated with many specialties to promptly and successfully treat the patient.
Previously, the hospital also successfully performed surgery on a rare condition of critical lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to chronic portal vein obstruction combined with intestinal arteriovenous malformation for Mr. T. (residing in Ca Mau province).
