Deputy military commander of a commune in Quang Nam arrested for receiving money to avoid military service examination

On November 5, the Investigation Police Agency of Phu Ninh District Police, Quang Nam Province, announced that the unit had just issued a decision to prosecute and an arrest warrant to temporarily detain Vo Thanh Hung, Deputy Commander of Tam Thanh Commune Military Command, for 4 months for the act of "Abusing position and power to appropriate property".

The investigation results determined that in 2023, while holding the position of Deputy Commander of the Tam Thanh Commune Military Command, Hung sent a message to the Tam Thanh Commune militia's Zalo group informing that in the 2024 military recruitment, superiors would request that all militiamen be sent for military service examination.

Upon receiving the above message, many members of the Tam Thanh militia were afraid of being called up for military service in 2024, so they contacted Hung for help. A total of 9 militia members transferred a total of 85 million VND to Hung. In addition, Hung also received 35 million VND to help a university student avoid being called up for military service in 2024.

After receiving the money, Hung took advantage of his position, authority and assigned tasks to advise Mr. Le Van Bich - Vice Chairman of the Military Service Council of Tam Thanh commune - to ask the council to agree to allow the militia force to postpone the military service examination and postpone the military enlistment.

As a result, all the militiamen, thanks to Hung's intervention, were temporarily postponed from military service; the number of people who were called for military service were also temporarily postponed from military service.

The case is being further investigated and handled by Phu Ninh District Police.
