The whole province has more than 423,000 hectares of forest (according to Decision No. 816/QD-BNN dated March 20, 2024 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on announcing the current status of forests in 2023), with diverse and rich forest flora and fauna, many rare and precious species. Of which, the forest flora has 948 species, with 41 plant species listed in the Vietnam Red Book and the IUCN Red Book. The shrub and bamboo ecosystem has a fairly rich plant species composition, with 405 species, including 3 rare species: multi-canopy diamond, petelo diamond and red polygonum multiflorum. The grassland ecosystem has 259 species, in secondary form formed after forest fires, slash-and-burn or burning grasslands in the dry season.
The large forest area is also home to many animal species, including some rare and endangered species. The number of wild animals is 3,255 individuals, of which 889 are endangered, rare and endangered wild animals and 2,366 are common wild animals.

In particular, Muong Nhe Nature Reserve and Muong Phang historical relic forest and environmental landscape are places with high biodiversity, unique natural landscapes with many rare species of animals and plants.
Muong Nhe Nature Reserve alone has 27 orders; 95 families and 133 species of wild animals. Of which, there are 55 rare species of wild animals such as: Sun bears, Asian bears, silver-cheeked gibbons, langurs, monkeys, peacocks, red-necked hornbills, etc. Regarding birds and reptiles, a total of 210 species of birds belonging to 13 orders and 46 families have been recorded; of which 2 species are recorded in the IUCN Red Book such as: Wild kingfisher and yellow-breasted sparrow.
Mr. Diep Van Chinh, Director of Muong Nhe Nature Reserve said: In recent years, the unit has done a good job of forest protection management, forest ecosystem and landscape restoration, creating conditions for flora and fauna to develop. At the same time, it has strengthened propaganda to raise awareness among officials and people about the importance of protecting plants, animals, forest ecosystems, and conserving biodiversity. Coordinate with competent authorities to maintain and develop genetic resources and rare forest animals.

In addition to conserving forest biodiversity, in recent years, the province has focused on building production models that both create jobs, improve people's lives, and contribute to forest protection. Focus on developing non-timber forest products and medicinal herbs. Currently, the whole province has more than 2,180 hectares of medicinal herbs. Dien Bien province has developed a plan to develop precious medicinal herb growing areas in the area for the period 2022 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, with a scale and area of medicinal herbs of nearly 4,000 hectares.
Ecotourism is a direction of interest to exploit the strengths of forests. Based on the approved sustainable forest management plan, the forest ecotourism projects being developed are an important premise to call for investment in ecotourism to create sustainable income from forest resources.
Muong Nhe Nature Reserve has implemented an ecotourism, resort and entertainment project with various types, such as: Ecotourism, resort and entertainment; Muong Nhe Nature Reserve Animal Rescue Center; Nam Po cloud hunting tourist site; Dragon Waterfall 1 and Dragon Waterfall 2 tourist sites; 66 conservation site landmark tourist site; and the road to the landmark at the intersection of the three countries' borders, Vietnam - Laos - China.

To develop the multi-purpose value of forest ecosystems, functional sectors and local authorities need to continue to promote propaganda to change awareness and behavior, promote the role of the community in biodiversity conservation and restoration. Strengthen the control of wildlife trade activities. At the same time, research and develop support projects, programs and activities: Conservation of biodiversity of forest ecosystems; sustainable development, exploitation and processing of non-timber forest products and medicinal herbs associated with the traditional culture of the community and local people living near the forest. Attract investment resources from economic sectors to participate in sustainable development projects of forest ecosystems, rent forest environments to develop eco-tourism, resorts and entertainment according to regulations.
