On the afternoon of June 25, the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City organized a workshop on "Researching digital transformation solutions to serve the press industry", aiming to find solutions and apply technology in digital transformation in the press sector, supporting press agencies to promote the application of information technology in management and operation.
After implementing the press planning, Ho Chi Minh City currently has 19 press agencies with more than 2,500 journalists granted cards and more than 160 representative offices of other central and local press agencies operating in the area.
In the context of press agencies facing fierce competition from social networks with their easy access, easy sharing, fast and diverse information, Vietnamese press needs to quickly take the lead in digital transformation. However, in reality, the digital transformation and multi-platform content production of press agencies in our country are currently facing many difficulties and challenges.
Currently, some press agencies have implemented digital transformation from stages such as: Transforming content production, focusing on user interests to create content suitable for reader and viewer segments; diversifying forms of content creation. Using multiple platforms to approach users in the method of "where the user is, there is information"; forming press links with social networks and digital platforms.
According to MSc. Nguyen Minh Hai, Head of the Press and Publishing Department, Propaganda Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, digital transformation of the press is an inevitable trend of press activities in the current period. Despite many efforts, the city's press agencies still face many difficulties in the process of digital transformation, such as technical infrastructure, capital, human resources, data exploitation and analysis, etc.
In recent times, the press in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the press in the whole country in general have gradually transformed digitally, creating creativity and gradually adapting to the new context. Some press agencies have proactively built multimedia convergence newsrooms, increasingly modern working environments, gradually implementing digital transformation according to the conditions of each newspaper and achieving important initial results.
“It is worth mentioning that Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper has deployed sending and editing news articles via the CMS system (instead of sending emails as before), contributing significantly to shortening the news article processing process (data entry, editing, exporting files...), speeding up the publishing progress on electronic newspapers. Reporters have gradually approached, become familiar with and proficiently used many modern devices to work on various types of journalism, especially video clips and longform. The newspaper regularly uses online meeting services to organize meetings, professional activities with reporters, collaborators or organize the exchange of unexpected work...", MSc. Nguyen Minh Hai shared.
MSc. Nguyen Van Khanh, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Press Center, admitted that the digital transformation and multi-platform content production of press agencies in our country are currently facing many difficulties. These include the lack of autonomy in technology, not being completely autonomous in servers, CMS, security, Cloud... forcing them to depend on partner technology; being heavily influenced by information on social networks, at risk of being led by fake news, unverified news; press agencies are frequently having their content copyrights stolen, and so far there has been no solution to prevent it.
In addition, many general news websites, Facebook groups, and YouTube copy or "remix" the content to post according to their own intentions, distorting the content, deliberately steering public opinion in a negative direction, causing significant consequences for the social community.
Regarding solutions, MSc. Nguyen Van Khanh also proposed that press agencies need to coordinate with the national press digital transformation roadmap, quickly concretize policy and financial support; promote and control the digital transformation process according to the Central roadmap, and digitally transform in a direction that is specific to the city's press.
In addition, press agencies need to build a shared database, with data stored on the city's server system to enhance security. Focus on training, professional development, and basic, necessary skills for reporters and journalists in the process of working and converting to digital journalism.
