An aircraft maintenance facility of Delta Air Lines (USA)

WSB-TV reported that two people were killed and one seriously injured when a plane's wheel exploded while being removed for maintenance at a facility operated by Delta Air Lines at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia.
The incident occurred on the morning of August 27 (local time) and left a Delta Air Lines employee and a contractor dead. The injured person, another employee of the US airline, is currently being treated at a hospital in Atlanta.
The exact cause is unclear, but sources said the three crew members were killed when a wheel exploded while being removed from the plane. The plane had arrived from Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 25 and was being taken to a hangar for routine maintenance.
"The Delta family is deeply saddened by the loss of two team members and another injured following an incident this morning at our Atlanta engineering operations maintenance facility. We offer our full support to the family and co-workers during this incredibly difficult time," a Delta Air Lines spokesperson said.
"The Delta family is grateful for the swift action of the first responders and medical team at the scene. We are working with local authorities and conducting a full investigation to determine what happened," the spokesperson added.
Commercial aircraft tires are pressurized, and even single-aisle aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 have tires inflated to pressures of up to 300 psi. For comparison, car tire pressure is typically around 35 psi.
Wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777 can inflate their tires to 320 psi to withstand the enormous forces during takeoff and landing, although this level of inflation comes with some risks. The model of aircraft involved is unknown.
Although rare, a blown tire releases a large amount of energy and fragments are ejected like shrapnel.
