A difficult year for Vietnamese football

According to VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan, 2024 is a challenging year for Vietnamese football. However, VFF and the teams, including individual players and coaching staff, have made efforts and achieved remarkable achievements. Most notably, the third AFF Cup championship of the Vietnamese team has brought great inspiration to fans. This is the first time the Golden Star team has won the championship on away ground, when they defeated Thailand with an emotional performance. In particular, coach Kim Sang-sik's team won all four final matches (2 semi-finals and 2 finals), thereby affirming the leading position of Vietnamese football in the regional arena.

The Vietnamese women's futsal team broke Thailand's dominance for the first time to win the Southeast Asian championship, creating good momentum towards the Asian finals and opening up opportunities to compete for a place in the World Cup (held for the first time). In addition, the men's futsal team also maintained its position in the leading group of the region, winning the runner-up position in Southeast Asia in 2024.

In addition, the Vietnam U.17 team also made its mark when it won a ticket to the 2025 AFC U.17 Championship finals in April 2025 in Saudi Arabia. This is an important opportunity for the youth team to prepare for major tournaments such as the SEA Games and the World Cup qualifiers in the upcoming period. At the 2025 AFC U.17 Championship finals, Vietnam U.17 also has hope of winning a ticket to the 2025 AFC U.17 World Cup if it passes the group stage.

Be proactive for big goals

Regarding the goals and tasks of Vietnamese football in 2025, Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan affirmed that VFF has made thorough preparations with a series of plans implemented from 2023 and 2024. This is very necessary, because football is cyclical, requiring continuous preparation to ensure sustainability in achievements.

For example, in 2024, although there is no important tournament, the Vietnamese women's team will still receive strong investment, with training trips to Europe and participation in quality friendly tournaments in China. This is the foundation for generational transition, as many players from the previous World Cup generation have retired, requiring the building of a successor force to be carried out early. Entering 2025, the Vietnamese women's team must undertake important tasks: participating in the Asian qualifiers towards the World Cup, competing in the Southeast Asian Championship, and defending the SEA Games gold medal in Thailand. The two top goals set by the VFF are that the Vietnamese women's team must be present at the Asian finals and maintain the top position in the region. However, Vietnamese women's football will face significant challenges as regional rivals such as Indonesia and the Philippines are showing strong investment, especially in increasing the naturalization of players.

In addition to women's football, the Vietnamese men's football team is also preparing to enter the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup starting in March 2025, with the goal of winning a ticket to the final round. This is the most prestigious arena of continental football, and is the playground where the Vietnamese team has continuously participated in recent tournaments. Achievements in the Asian Cup finals and World Cup qualifiers not only affirm the position of Vietnamese football but are also an important stepping stone towards bigger goals.

The Vietnam U.22 (U.23) team also carries an important task when participating in the 33rd SEA Games, in December 2025 in Thailand. Towards this goal, since 2024, VFF has worked closely with coach Kim Sang-sik to prepare the force. Many promising young players have been regularly summoned to compete at the national team level. These are key factors that promise to create a solid framework for the Vietnam U.22 team at the 33rd SEA Games. In addition, in 2024, the Vietnam U.22 team will also have the opportunity to participate in an international tournament in China, facing strong opponents such as China, Uzbekistan and Japan, thereby accumulating valuable lessons, contributing to improving their level and preparing for the future.

In 2025, there will be 4 football teams representing Vietnam participating in the SEA Games (2 futsal teams and 2 11-a-side teams), requiring close coordination and careful calculation from VFF's professional departments. According to the plan, in June, the Vietnamese men's futsal team will participate in quality international friendly matches to prepare for the SEA Games as well as the Southeast Asian Championship. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's futsal team will have international training and competition trips to ensure comprehensive preparation. These plans will not only help players improve their skills but also create conditions for the team to be ready to conquer big goals in 2025. VFF has high expectations for both teams (men's and women's), believing that thorough investment and clear direction will bring new successes to Vietnamese futsal in the regional and continental arenas.

Persist with youth football training and development strategy

VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan emphasized that the trend of increasing the use of naturalized players is taking place strongly in both Europe and Asia, contributing to enhancing the strength of national teams. However, this is carefully considered, to ensure both preserving national identity and maximizing collective strength to aim for greater goals. The use of naturalized players in the national team not only complies with FIFA regulations but is also based on the wishes of the players and their suitability to professional and cultural criteria.

In addition, youth training is also given special attention. From the U.9, U.11, U.15, U.17 to U.21 youth tournaments, VFF has paid special attention to the age groups from U.15 to U.21 - the key stage for players to perfect their skills and gain experience. Vietnam's youth teams have had the opportunity to train and compete in friendly matches in Japan, Qatar, China, Uzbekistan and many other countries. In 2024, all youth teams, from U.16 to U.19, participated in high-quality friendly tournaments, competing with strong teams such as Uzbekistan, Japan and Korea.

Mr. Tuan affirmed that with strong investment efforts and the right strategy, Vietnamese youth football not only creates a solid foundation but also ensures stability and long-term development for the national team in the future.

Join hands for the sustainable development of Vietnamese football

According to the VFF President, to build a sustainable football development, one of the core factors is to create mechanisms to support clubs, businesses and youth football training centers in improving facilities. Because only when there are good facilities, can sports talents have the conditions to develop. Currently, in some localities, there are still many difficulties in infrastructure, especially the issue of football fields and land funds. This requires attention and support from all levels of government, from central to local, so that clubs have the conditions to develop stably and sustainably.

"A strong football foundation can only be built when each club - the "cells" of football - develop well. Therefore, VFF hopes to receive attention from leaders, agencies, departments and local authorities to create preferential mechanisms to help football clubs in Vietnam develop comprehensively. When the clubs develop stably, Vietnamese football will have a solid foundation to reach further in the international arena. In addition to the attention of the State, the socialization factor plays a particularly important role in the development of sports in general and football in particular. A strong sports foundation needs the participation of businesses investing in professional sports and community football. Effective socialization will create large resources, helping to promote the development and professionalization of key sports of the country. Therefore, it is necessary to have preferential policies specifically for businesses investing in sports, especially football. This is not only a driving force to promote "The socialization of sports is also an essential condition for Vietnamese football to continue to professionalize, meet fans' expectations and affirm its position in the international arena," said VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan.
