The SAT is a widely used test for university and college admissions in the United States. Today, many Vietnamese students use their SAT results to study abroad or apply to schools in Vietnam.
Before taking the exam, Vietnamese students often have the habit of searching for previous exam papers to practice. One math question from the SAT exam that once stumped many Americans is now being shared among Vietnamese students as they try to solve it.
The problem states: Given t = 333, what is the result of the following calculation?
Surprisingly, this wasn't a problem that posed a challenge for Vietnamese students. Some students were even able to solve it and find the answer very quickly.
Le Trung Kien (a former student specializing in Mathematics) said that this is a common problem for high school students in Vietnam, and even a student in a regular class could do well and find the answer.
"Just substitute t = 333 into the expression and do a simple calculation, and we'll have the answer. Perhaps the American students were tricked, not thinking the SAT math test would be that easy, and made it difficult for themselves," Kien said.
Another young person pointed out a second way to solve this calculation: using the properties of multiplication, then obtaining the result of the expression as t/3, substituting t = 333 will find the answer.
Before going viral on social media, this math problem originated from a video by an American account titled "94% of Americans can't do this question," sparking curiosity about the difficulty of the SAT exam.
Some people argue that the creator of the clip used a sensational title to attract attention online, but in reality, it's an easy question, and the statistic that 94% of Americans can't answer it is unbelievable.
Another math problem also went viral online after an American TikToker posted it on their personal page with the title: "The hardest question on the SAT exam."
This has motivated many Vietnamese students to tackle math problems; however, Vietnamese students don't need to spend too much time to find the answers.
Tran Thu Hoai (a 11th-grade student in Hanoi ) said that math problems like these are nothing new to high school students; in fact, students have practiced this type of problem many times for the university entrance exam.
"This wasn't a difficult question; it only took me a minute to complete," Hoai said.
So what's your opinion? Can you solve this problem?
