A day earlier, the highest temperature recorded in Beijing, a city of nearly 22 million people, exceeded 41 degrees Celsius, breaking the record for the hottest day in June.

According to Reuters, a weather station in the southern suburbs of Beijing recorded 41.1 degrees Celsius at noon on June 22. This is the main measuring station and is considered the standard temperature measuring point for the Chinese capital.

The record for the hottest June day in Beijing was set on June 10, 1961, when the thermometer hit 40.6 degrees Celsius.

"This station has only had temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius three times since China began weather-related temperature," CCTV reported, citing information from the China National Meteorological Center.

The temperature record on June 22 was also the second highest ever recorded in Beijing's history, only lower than the record of 41.9 degrees Celsius on July 24, 1999.

China maintains a four-tier heat warning system, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

Along Beijing's canals, people seek relief from the excessive heat by rushing to bathe in the canals.

In the city of Tianjin near the capital, home to more than 13 million people, temperatures in the city centre also soared, with Xiqing district recording Tianjin's highest temperature in June at 40.6 degrees Celsius.

Across China, a total of 17 weather stations recorded record-breaking temperatures in individual regions on June 22, according to the country's National Meteorological Center.

Human-caused climate change is bringing more frequent heat waves around the world. And China is experiencing devastating heat waves.
