On the afternoon of November 17, at Van Thanh tourist area, Binh Thanh district (HCMC), 231 new students from the Southeast region and many other provinces gathered for the scholarship program "Tiep suc den truong" organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper and Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union.

Coming from Thu Dau Mot City ( Binh Duong ) to the scholarship award ceremony early, Nguyen Thi My Hang and her granddaughter were more cheerful after many days of anxiously waiting for the opportunity to receive a scholarship. For nearly 10 years now, since her father passed away and her mother became ill and unable to work, Hang has grown up thanks to her grandmother's lottery tickets, weathering the sun and rain.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi No (67 years old, Hang's grandmother) rides her bike every day trying to sell 150 lottery tickets to earn 150,000 VND to support her daughter and grandchild. That amount of money is enough for the whole family of three to feed, not to mention the money for her grandchild to go to school.
Hearing that her granddaughter had become a new student of Law and Maritime Policy at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, Mrs. No was both happy and worried. She was happy that her granddaughter was doing well, but she was worried about where she would get the money to continue her studies.
Sharing with us when she learned that Hang received a scholarship from Tuoi Tre newspaper, Mrs. No was moved because her granddaughter had the first chance to reach the lecture hall.
“I am so happy. Thank you so much for the scholarship because it has helped my grandchild pay for his tuition, otherwise I could not afford it,” said Mrs. No. She said that on the afternoon of November 17, she asked the lottery agent to let her take half a day off from selling tickets to take her grandchild to Ho Chi Minh City to receive the scholarship.
My Hang is also happy and grateful to the benefactors who gave her the scholarship: "When I graduate, I will work to earn money to repay my grandmother and those who helped me," she confided.

New student gets advance scholarship due to hardship: “If Tuoi Tre didn't help, I would have had to drop out of school”
Driving alone a long distance from Binh Chanh District (HCMC) to receive a scholarship, Pham Quach Bao Loc, a new student at the School of Labor and Social Affairs, said he was not tired, and was even very happy - Photo: TU TRUNG
Pham Quach Bao Loc, a new student at the School of Social Work (HCMC campus), spent more than an hour driving from his home in Binh Chanh District to the scholarship awarding location. Despite the long journey, Loc said he was not tired and was even very happy.
Loc is an orphan, his mother, Quach Ngoc Thu, is now 62 years old. The mother and son depend on each other in a damp house, hidden in an alley of Vinh Loc B commune, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City. The highlight of the house, which is made of old wooden panels, is a series of certificates of merit, certificates of merit, and certificates bearing the name Pham Quach Bao Loc for his achievements in academic competitions.
At the end of August, Tuoi Tre newspaper decided to advance the scholarship (15 million VND) so that Loc could complete the admission procedures in time.
“Because I received the scholarship in advance, I had to attend the ceremony today. I wanted to meet and thank the uncles, aunts, benefactors and the organizers for their timely help. Even though I ran around everywhere and worked as much as I could, if I hadn’t received the scholarship in advance, I probably would have had to drop out of school,” Loc said emotionally.
The initial support made Loc full of confidence. Loc said that he has stopped doing heavy work, working late at night (carrying rice, selling goods, baking...) like before. Instead, Loc applied to be a tutor, teaching because it is more convenient anyway.
Just entered university and already working too much, hearing about the scholarship 'wondered if someone was cheating me'
Nguyen Duong Quat Tuan, a new student at the University of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University, happily called his mother before receiving his scholarship. Nguyen Duong Quat Tuan – a freshman at the University of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University – took the bus at noon from Thu Duc City to Binh Thanh District, where the scholarship award ceremony took place, very early. Tuan stood on the stage, sweating profusely from having to walk a long distance.
Even when he saw his name on the list of scholarship recipients this time, Tuan said he was still very surprised and could not believe it. “I was told over the phone that I had passed and would receive the scholarship on November 17, which was a huge surprise. I thought I had been tricked. For me and my mother, this scholarship is extremely valuable and can help us do a lot of things,” Tuan said.
Tuan said he has no father, his mother is a garment worker in Quang Ngai. The small salary is the source of income for his mother and three children (after Tuan, he has a younger sister in 8th grade). Growing up in hardship, Tuan matured very early.
The first time Tuan came to Ho Chi Minh City was to enroll in school, he went alone. Tuan knew he would have to work a lot so he took the initiative to rent a room. Living with four other students in a rented room, cooking for himself or eating free school meals (lunch) helped Tuan save the most on expenses.
“I just got a part-time job editing videos for a company and get paid about 2 million VND/month. I save that money to pay for accommodation and food. It’s hard to have any left over, but if possible, I will save it to pay for tuition,” Tuan said.
Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh (Viet Bone and Joint Clinic) - sponsor: Tuition fees are getting too high, which makes me sad, because poor students can drop out of school.

Doctor Nam Anh said that because he was busy with work, he had little opportunity to participate in social activities, especially helping poor new students. But the fact that universities are constantly increasing tuition fees makes him worried, because with tuition fees at many schools reaching nearly 100 million/year, he is afraid that many young people, no matter how good they are, will have difficulty keeping up.
“I accidentally read an article about a new student who was very good at studying, had high scores, and was admitted to a quality school, but because of poverty, he thought about dropping out of school. From then on, I became more interested in the program, and gradually accompanied and contributed a little to help them take the first steps,” said Dr. Nam Anh.
Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh said he was more concerned, because after all, all the help and value of the scholarship were limited. From there, he hoped that new students would need to clearly define their own learning path, strive, and work carefully.

One of the earliest students to receive the scholarship was new student Ngo Thi Kieu Vy from Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City, a new student at Saigon University.
Vy lost her father during the days preparing for her 12th grade graduation exam. The burden of making a living fell on her hard-working mother, a worker for a shoe company.
“My mother’s salary supports the whole family, I feel so sorry for her. When I get a scholarship, I will save it to pay for tuition, to help my mother ease some of her worries,” Vy confided.
Vy’s mother took her to receive the scholarship, and her aunt and two cousins went with her. A driver near her house offered to take her for free. “I saw that the mother and daughter were in difficult circumstances, and Vy was trying hard to get into university, so I helped take the mother and daughter to receive the scholarship and encouraged her that no matter how difficult it was, everyone would be there for her,” said Trong.
Known as a native of Ho Chi Minh City, Ngo Thi Kieu Vy (a 12th grader at An Nhon Tay High School, Cu Chi District) rarely gets to go to the city center. Now she knows all the bus routes to get from her accommodation in Binh Chanh District to school and return to Cu Chi District on weekends to visit her family.
Ms. Tong Thi Thanh Tuyen, Ngo Thi Kieu Vy's 12th grade homeroom teacher, said over the phone that Vy's academic results in the 12th grade were 9.0, excellent student and good conduct. Despite the family's unfortunate circumstances, her father passed away right in the last days of the 12th grade, she tried to overcome them to continue studying and achieve good results to enter Saigon University.

Sharing at the scholarship award ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hong said that in addition to training and scientific research, community service is also a task that Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry focuses on.
“The school’s motto is not to let students drop out of school due to lack of funds. Therefore, we are honored to join Tuoi Tre newspaper in contributing our efforts to nurturing the future of the country.
I was also a student, so I understand the value of being helped when you are not able to go to school. And I see that students also appreciate that very much,” said Dr. Hong.
The older sister became a 'parent' to her unloved younger sister, happy when she was given strength
Ms. Thanh Nhon works as a worker in Dong Nai province. Today, she happily held her child and took Lai Thi Thanh Ngan to receive the scholarship. Ms. Nhon shared: "Thanh Ngan has lived with me since she was born, so when we got the good news that she received the scholarship, my sister and I attended the 2024 TSĐT Program of Tuoi Tre newspaper" - Photo: TU TRUNG
Attending the scholarship award ceremony with her sister from her hometown in Thong Nhat district (Dong Nai), Lai Thi Thanh Ngan (a new student majoring in multimedia communications at the College of Radio and Television II) said that this scholarship is extremely meaningful to her, as it can help cover and repay the debt that Ngan's sister had borrowed earlier to pay her tuition at the beginning of the year.
Ngan confided that her father passed away before she was born, and her mother later had a new family. Since childhood, Ngan and her sister relied on each other to grow up.
Ms. Lai Thi Thanh Nhon (Ngan's older sister) was happy when her sister passed the entrance exam to college in the career she loved. Ms. Nhon and her husband are factory workers and are raising a small child. Due to difficult circumstances, she had many times thought of letting her sister drop out of school because she was afraid she would not be able to take care of herself. But seeing her sister crying and begging her to let her go to school, she tried to save her salary so that she could have the opportunity to fulfill her dream.
Recently, when her younger sister needed money to pay her tuition at the beginning of the year, in addition to deducting her salary, Nhon and her husband had to borrow money from everywhere, then pawn a phone for 2 million VND to barely have enough.
“Now, every time I receive my salary, I give Ngan a portion to have money for food and living expenses. She is also studying and working during the holidays to have more money for her studies, earning every penny she can. The scholarship from Tuoi Tre newspaper today has really helped my sister a lot,” said Ms. Nhon.

“Ngoc has been an excellent student for 12 years, so I am very proud of her. When we heard that our daughter passed the university entrance exam, the whole family was both happy and worried, because the family was very poor. The family had no land, so my husband and I worked as hired laborers in a dragon fruit growing area for others. Even though we were poor, my husband and I tried to let our daughter study because she was good.
Hearing the news that my daughter received a scholarship, my whole family was so happy that we couldn't sleep.
Today, I took a day off from work to take my daughter. With this money, my husband and I can ease the burden of the beginning of the school year for our daughter. The road ahead is still long, but we will not let our daughter drop out of school halfway.”
