Three notes on reviewing Literature exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City

To achieve the best scores in the three parts of the 10th grade Literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City, students need to have a firm grasp of the types of questions, expand their practical knowledge, practice reading skills and cite appropriate evidence.

In less than two weeks, students in Ho Chi Minh City will take the 10th grade public entrance exam. The city's Literature exam has been evaluated as interesting, creative, and challenging for candidates for many years. This year, the structure of the 10th grade entrance exam in Literature remains unchanged, with three parts: Reading Comprehension (3 points), Social Essay (3 points), and Literary Essay (4 points). The test time is 120 minutes.

For the Reading Comprehension section, the text can be argumentative texts, informational texts, literary texts, and scientific texts. The questions in this section are arranged from easy to difficult. However, difficult here does not mean complicated, difficult questions only stop at the application level. Students only need to understand the problem correctly and master the skills to be able to complete the requirements of the topic well.

When practicing, students should avoid the habit of reading the text right from the beginning. The first thing to do is to read the questions to understand the requirements, then read the text. When reading, students should use a pen to underline and take notes on the details used to answer. The answer should be written as a complete sentence, with a subject and predicate, avoiding abbreviations, keywords or truncated sentences. In addition, students should limit the order of sentences, causing difficulty and confusion for the examiner, leading to loss of points.

When reviewing the Reading Comprehension section, in addition to the knowledge of Vietnamese in grade 9, students need to review the methods of expression, rhetorical devices, sentence-making skills, and paragraph writing that they learned in lower grades. The highest requirement of this section is to write complete paragraphs.

In addition, students practice solving many real-life problems, trying to do them carefully to get maximum points because this part is easier to get points than other parts.

For the social argumentation section, candidates need to have a firm grasp of two types of essays: Argumentation about an event or phenomenon in life and argumentation about an ideological or moral issue. To do well, candidates need to regularly follow current news on official channels to increase their understanding, have a complete view of a specific issue, and find good evidence for the social argumentation essay.

Writing practice is the best way to review. However, social argumentation topics are unlimited, so students can refer to topics online or reference materials to practice outlining and writing.

The weakest skill of many students is presenting evidence such as using too familiar or inappropriate evidence. For example, the story of Edison failing thousands of times before inventing the incandescent light bulb has been used in many topics such as willpower, dreams, determination or even unrelated topics such as sacrifice and a good lifestyle.

Therefore, you need to learn how to cite evidence in your essay and ask your teacher to review and give you comments.

Literary essay is a relatively heavier part than the previous two parts. In this part, students usually choose one of two topics.

Question one usually requires students to choose a given work, feel and point out the influence and impact of the work on themselves or relate it to other works and situations to draw lessons. To do this well, students need to review by topic, for example, topics about love of country, labor, soldiers, family affection.

When reviewing, students should try to point out the correlation between the works, focusing on the passages and details that make up their core spiritual values. The important requirement is to master the method of discussing a story, poem, or poem passage. Once they have mastered the basic method, students can continue to practice more related and extended types of questions.

If you have time, you should read some works outside of the textbook, with the same topic as the work you have studied, to make it easier to relate when doing the exercises.

Question number two usually poses a specific situation and requires students to use their knowledge and experience from reading to solve it. Experience in this case includes both literary experience and life experience. Students need to connect their understanding of literature and life to complete the task.

Students need to know how to build arguments to clarify the problem and their own point of view, and know how to use literary works they have studied or within the scope of the topic as evidence to increase the persuasiveness of their point of view.
