On March 2, at the most remote island commune of Ho Chi Minh City (Thanh An commune, Can Gio), the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, along with socio-political organizations and the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard Command, organized many meaningful programs such as starting construction, repairing houses and providing medical examination and treatment for households in difficult circumstances on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the People's Border Guard Day (March 3, 1989 - March 3, 2024).
Ms. Tran Kim Yen, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, shared that this year, the festival has new contents such as: awarding scholarships to disadvantaged children, upgrading public parks... Ho Chi Minh City is focusing resources to improve the quality of life of islanders.
Specifically, the health check-up and free medicine distribution event was carried out by a team of doctors from the Department of Health and Gia Dinh People's Hospital to care for and ensure the health of people in the island commune. In addition, the organizing committee presented more than 300 gifts to households participating in the check-up.
Ms. Bach Thi Gam (51 years old, living in Thanh An commune) expressed: ''My family has many difficulties, I am very happy to receive free medical examination. I would like to thank you, the government officials, if it could be like this forever, it would be great''.
In addition to visiting and encouraging the people, the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City and the Border Guard Command have set a goal of supporting the people of Thanh An island commune to overcome difficulties and strive to build a stable life. At the same time, this is also an opportunity to honor the merits and contributions of the Border Guard in protecting the country's territorial sovereignty and border security.
The house of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Luom (61 years old) is seriously degraded, many areas in the house have sunk. She is also 1 of 5 households supported with 50 million VND to repair the house.
The organizing committee has started construction of 2 houses and repaired 5 houses in Thanh An island commune (Can Gio district) with a total cost of 390 million VND.
''I was so happy I couldn't sleep, I had never had such a large amount of money. I was so happy, I could both cover my living expenses and repair my house so I could have a place to eat and sleep,'' Ms. Nguyen Thi Xe (73 years old, Thanh An commune) shared.
To serve people in daily life as well as infrastructure development, projects in Thanh An commune such as Thanh Hoa hamlet park, border lighting project at Thieng Lieng salt field embankment, and 1,000 national flags project are also supported for people.
On this occasion, people can participate in cultural and entertainment activities and meet and interact with Border Guard officers. In addition, there are also music performances and film screenings about the islands to help people better understand their work.
Along with supporting the upgrading of island infrastructure, the organizing committee awarded 111 scholarships, 22 means of livelihood, and 200 gifts to Border Guard forces and households in difficult circumstances... with a total amount of more than 2 billion 400 million VND.
On the same day, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard Command to plant 100 golden bell trees in the stone embankment area on Thanh An island commune.
Major Tran Xuan Hoang, Political Commissar of Thanh An Border Guard Station, shared: ''In the area of Thanh An commune, people still face many difficulties in terms of material and geographical conditions. When the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and socio-political organizations brought the People's Border Guard Day to the island commune, we were extremely grateful and happy. On behalf of the people, I would like to express my gratitude to the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City at all levels and the departments and organizations.''
Border guards must work around the clock to protect the border, prevent criminal infiltration, and prevent activities that threaten national security. National Border Guard Day is not only an occasion to honor the brave soldiers, but also an opportunity to express gratitude and support for the border guards, while promoting solidarity.
