Apple is still developing an in-display fingerprint sensor

According to 4gnews , fingerprint sensors are still a popular authentication technology among fans, but the design limitations that take up screen space have made them less popular with Apple since the company switched to Face ID. There have been rumors that Apple is exploring under-screen Touch ID technology to implement in the iPhone 16 series.

iPhone 16 users still have to rely on Face ID for biometric login instead of Touch ID

However, the latest report on Chinese social network Weibo says that Touch ID is still not possible for the iPhone 16. This is disappointing news for fans but also not too surprising when looking at what is happening.

Explaining this reason, sources said that Apple has permanently stopped producing the chips needed to use Touch ID on the iPhone. The remaining components in stock will be transferred to the iPhone SE 3. This move even shows that Apple seems to have no plans to restore Touch ID on its smartphones, because ending the production of components needed for Touch ID is not simple.

It's important to note that the only Apple phone that still uses Touch ID is the iPhone SE 3. New reports also suggest that the lineup will soon ditch the fingerprint sensor as well, following the rollout of Face ID on the iPhone SE 4.

The question is, is this the end of the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone? It's too early to say for sure, as there are rumors that Apple is continuing to develop an in-display fingerprint sensor. This new technology could debut in 2026, when Apple could place Face ID sensors under the iPhone 18's screen. What's almost certain at this point is that Touch ID will not return with the iPhone 16.
