At 7:30 a.m. on July 14 (Vietnam time), the Spanish women's team will play a friendly match with the Vietnamese women's team in Auckland.
The match took place behind closed doors to ensure secrecy for both teams ahead of the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Ahead of the match against the Vietnamese women's team, Spain is facing a lot of worries as the team's most important star, Alexia Putellas, has not yet recovered from injury.
Since arriving in New Zealand, the captain of the Spanish women's team has had to train separately.
The midfielder, born in 1994, has physical problems and cannot fully follow the training sessions of coach Jorge Vilda. In fact, the 29-year-old player has not participated in the last two training sessions.
Thus, Alexia Putellas will definitely not be present in the match against the Vietnamese women's team.
Previously, Alexia Putellas missed almost the entire 2022/23 season due to an injury at the 2022 European Women's Championship. She had to undergo surgery and only returned to the field on April 30.
Despite not being in good physical condition, Alexia Putellas still received the trust of coach Jorge Vilda. He named his favorite student to attend the 2023 World Cup.
Explaining his choice, coach Jorge Vilda said: "I have seen Alexia Putellas recover very well. She can play the friendly match with Panama but I am not taking any risks. The coaching staff will find a way to help Alexia Putellas."
With the 2023 Women's World Cup approaching, coach Alexia Putellas did not risk putting Alexia Putellas' name on the list to meet the Vietnamese women's team.
The 1994-born midfielder is considered one of the greatest players in Spanish women's football. She won the Golden Ball and The Best awards for two consecutive years (2021, 2022).
Even when not in the best form, Alexia Putellas is still considered the most important player of the Spanish women's team at the 2023 World Cup.
