The decision to award the title to the 76-year-old strategist clearly stated: "Awarding the title of Hero of Labor to Mr. Mai Duc Chung, former head coach of the Vietnam national women's football team, Vietnam Football Federation, for his exceptionally outstanding achievements in creative labor, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland."
Coach Mai Duc Chung
This is a worthy reward for coach Mai Duc Chung's contributions to Vietnamese football over more than four decades, culminating in resounding success with the Vietnamese women's team.
Coach Mai Duc Chung is a monument of Vietnamese women's football, when he and the women's team dominated the SEA Games with 6 gold medals, won the AFF Cup, won fourth place at the 2014 ASIAD, fifth place at the 2022 Asian Cup and won a ticket to the 2023 World Cup. Mr. Chung was also successful with men's football, when he coached the Vietnamese team (in an interim position) through a difficult period, or with Binh Duong Club reached the semi-finals of the 2009 AFC Cup.
Immediately after receiving the title of Hero of Labor, Coach Mai Duc Chung excitedly shared with Thanh Nien Newspaper: "I am extremely happy with this title. However, this is an honor not only for me personally, but also for the whole team, crystallized from the efforts of many people. I would like to thank the Party, the State, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Physical Training and Sports, the entire Vietnam women's team, the Vietnam Football Federation and the teams... Without them, I would not have this honor today. This is the result of the team.
I promise to use this as motivation to continue to strive, first of all, with the Vietnamese women's team to prepare well for tournaments in 2025 such as the AFF Cup, the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games."
Keep fighting
At the age of 76, Coach Mai Duc Chung has not stopped yet. He decided to return to the Vietnam women's team after only 4 months of rest, to join his students in conquering new goals.
Coach Mai Duc Chung's contract with the Vietnam Football Federation will last until the end of this year. It is expected that after the 33rd SEA Games, Mr. Chung will leave his position to fully rest and take care of his family.
Coach Mai Duc Chung is still passionate
On his return, Mr. Chung set himself the goal of completing the final contract, with two goals named AFF Cup and SEA Games this year.
"Some people ask me why I haven't rested yet. Is it wise to stop at the top, because what if... the end of my career is not successful? But I'm not afraid of failure. I'm ready to face it with responsibility and confidence. As long as the team needs me, I will still be there," Coach Mai Duc Chung confided on the first day of the year.
The title of Hero of Labor will be the motivation for Mr. Chung "xe ca" to complete the final steps of the Vietnam women's team.
