Who should pay the billion-dollar compensation for the global computer incident?

The issue stems from some buggy code in a software update by CrowdStrike. Fixing the bug takes longer than causing it, and it could take days for systems to return to normal.

CrowdStrike has apologized but has made no mention of compensation for affected customers. Experts predict that there will be claims and possibly lawsuits.

“If you’re a CrowdStrike lawyer, you’re probably not going to like the rest of this summer,” said Dan Ives, a technology analyst at Wedbush Securities.

Experts estimate the cost of the damage could exceed $1 billion. Patrick Anderson, CEO of Anderson Economic Group, said the incident affected many consumers and businesses in ways ranging from inconvenience to severe disruption and caused costs that are not easily recouped.

Although CrowdStrike is a leader in the cybersecurity industry, its annual revenue is just under $4 billion. However, there may be provisions in CrowdStrike's contracts with customers that protect it from liability.

“I guess the contracts will protect them,” said James Lewis, a research fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

As for how many customers it could lose, Dan Ives estimates that less than 5% would switch to another company. CrowdStrike could have trouble attracting new customers due to reputational damage.

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said in an interview that the company is focused on fixing the problem and believes most customers have been understanding.

CrowdStrike's competitors, however, may use the incident to attract their own customers. "This is an excellent company doing important work," said Eric O'Neill, a cybersecurity expert and former FBI agent. "I hope they get through this. If not, the only winners will be cybercriminals."
