As reported by Tuoi Tre Online : The Ministry of Education and Training is seeking opinions to draft a circular amending and supplementing the regulations on secondary school and high school admissions.

And what the public is particularly interested in is that in addition to the two subjects of math and literature for the entrance exam to grade 10, the Department of Education and Training will organize a random draw to select the third subject.

78% agree that grade 10 should take exams in three subjects: math, literature and English.

With the probing question: The Ministry of Education and Training is seeking opinions to draft a circular amending and supplementing the admission regulations, including the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025.

You support grade 10 admission in the following ways:

1- Take three subjects: math, literature, English.

2- Take three exams in math, literature and the third subject will be randomly drawn by the Department of Education and Training.

3- Exams in three subjects: math, literature and the third subject is decided by the Department of Education and Training according to local characteristics.

4- Other opinions.

Results: 78% of readers supported option 1; 12.2% of readers supported option 2; 9.8% of readers chose option 3 and 0% had other opinions.

Standing with the majority of readers who choose to take the 10th grade entrance exam in three subjects: math, literature and English, reader Quang believes that math, literature and English are the foundation for students to study well in all fields and integrate internationally. Therefore, these three subjects should be fixed.

Sharing the same opinion, reader Tran Quang Dinh added: "Foreign languages (mainly English) are very important. I think it is reasonable to enroll 10th graders in three subjects: literature, math, and English, without the need to randomly draw the third subject."

According to reader Thuy, students today have too many subjects, studying three fixed subjects is already too difficult, so the entrance exam that requires drawing lots will make it even more complicated.

According to reader Quang, this is an entrance exam. When finishing grade 9, students have completed updating all the knowledge required by the Ministry of Education and Training for the grade level, so an entrance exam consisting of three subjects: math, literature and English is the most feasible and reasonable.

Sharing the same opinion, reader Cung wrote: "In my opinion, the exams will still be the same: math, literature, and English. The Ministry of Education and Training wants to make English the second language in schools, so English is the third compulsory subject, which is correct. For the future generation to be able to step out into the world, the English exam is indispensable."

No draw

Responding to public opinion surrounding the lottery method, according to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong, fixing the 10th grade exam subjects could cause cramming and biased learning, so the ministry is considering the option of drawing lots for a third exam subject.

Regarding this idea, reader Tran Nam commented: "The training program structure is set by education managers, so why worry about "biased learning" and draw lots?"

Sharing the same thought, reader Nguyen Van An added: "Drawing lots for exam subjects is very stressful and wasteful. Because when students and their families know the exam subjects, they speed up their preparation for the transfer exam, which is very costly. In my opinion, drawing lots for exam subjects is unnecessary."

According to some readers, with the current stressful learning environment, the education sector should streamline to create an environment that encourages learning, and should not add the option of drawing lots in exams, which contributes to causing anxiety for students and parents.

Reader Tran Phan wrote: "Clear regulations are needed so that students can better prepare for their exams."

To encourage early learning of English to integrate with the world, reader Chi Cong agrees that English and two subjects, literature and math, should become compulsory subjects at all levels.

In addition, according to this reader, due to the different characteristics of each place, the Department of Education and Training of each province and city can decide on the exam subjects.

Adding another perspective, reader Thuy Le wrote: English is the second language, if we remove the English exam, it will not be good for the children in the future. I think that recruiting 10th graders with three subjects: math, literature, English or taking the average score of the three years of study is the fairest, no need for exams."
