Previewing the menu, bringing snacks, monitoring blood sugar… helps patients control their sugar levels better when attending parties.

People with diabetes often have their own diet to control blood sugar. Therefore, attending company parties, family parties, weddings or simply going out to eat, socializing with friends... sometimes ruin the efforts and diet of diabetics, affecting blood sugar. Below are 5 tips to help manage diabetes when participating in party activities.

Check blood sugar

Patients should check their blood sugar to prevent problems when their blood sugar is too low or too high. Knowing your blood sugar level helps you better prepare for your upcoming trip or event. You can carry blood sugar testing devices with you when you go out to use when needed.

Choose healthy foods

You can also look at the menu in advance to make healthy, balanced choices. Eat healthy salads or vegetables instead of unhealthy options like fried foods.

If you don’t know the menu at the event, prepare healthy snacks like nuts, cheese sticks, or whole-grain crackers to keep the party going. If you are taking blood sugar lowering medication, you can bring fast-acting sugary snacks. Limit foods and drinks that cause blood sugar spikes and consume them in moderation.

Limit alcohol consumption

Gatherings, parties, birthdays... often cannot lack alcoholic drinks. Alcohol can affect blood sugar, make symptoms worse and can interact with medications. Alcohol can also cause low blood sugar. Therefore, in cases where you cannot refuse the invitation, you should eat food while drinking alcohol, alternating between alcoholic drinks and water to stay hydrated and give the body time to metabolize alcohol and to keep blood sugar stable and avoid high blood alcohol concentration.

Instead of choosing sugary, high-calorie drinks, diabetics should choose low-carb, filtered water. Drinking filtered water helps you avoid overeating at a party, regulates your body temperature, and eliminates waste.

Party with family and friends

You can go to the party alone, but to ensure safety and more fun, you can go with relatives and friends who know your health condition. They can support you if you encounter an emergency when your blood sugar is high or low.
