Number of subjects can be more than 3
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has announced the structure and format of this year's public 10th grade entrance exam.
Accordingly, instead of focusing on reviewing three subjects: math, literature, and foreign language, candidates will have to review all subjects that count for points in the 2018 general education program, including natural sciences, history and geography, civics, and information technology.
Hanoi has not yet announced the number of subjects. However, the number of subjects may be more than 3, as was applied stably before Covid-19.
In case the exam plan of math, literature, foreign language and the 4th subject is reused, the number of subjects can be 5 - if the 4th subject is history and geography, or 6 - if the 4th subject is natural science (physics, chemistry, biology).
Multiple choice questions change, can't "circle randomly"
According to the exam format structure announced by the Department of Education and Training, multiple-choice exams are changed according to the format of the high school graduation exam.

Candidates no longer have the opportunity to "circle randomly" and still win, but must really have the ability to reason, analyze and have a solid grasp of basic knowledge to answer multiple-choice questions in true-false format and short-answer format.
In true-false format, each question has 4 answers, and candidates will only get full marks if they answer all 4 correctly. If they only answer 3 out of 4, they will only get half the points.
Literature is no longer a "favorite subject", writing essays instead of paragraphs
From 2025, students will no longer have a "closet" to review for the literature exam.
The phenomenon of "guessing the questions" like Den Vau or Kaito Kid will be a thing of the past because the essay questions will no longer be taken from textbooks.
To be able to do the test with completely new materials, candidates must have a firm grasp of the characteristics of the genres, memorize and master knowledge of Vietnamese, and have good reading comprehension skills.

In addition, from the upcoming 10th grade exam, Hanoi students will have to learn essay writing skills, not just paragraph writing. The social argumentation question, which accounts for 40% of the total score, is an essay of about 400 words.
An essay and a paragraph have distinct differences in requirements, structure, and characteristics of the type of essay. If candidates do not practice their essay writing skills, they will be confused and will not be able to fully handle the requirements of the question.
First time taking statistics and probability exam, many practical problems
Statistics and probability are two new contents of mathematics according to the 2018 General Education Program. This is also content with high practical application.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the math exam for grade 10 public schools next year will include statistics and probability.
The sample test published by the Department of Education and Training also shows an increase in practical problems in the algebra section. This reflects the direction of the new education program, which focuses more on testing students' ability to apply knowledge and synthesize thinking.
The new way of making questions also requires candidates to have a solid grasp of both knowledge and test-taking skills.
Mr. Do Van Bao - a math teacher in Hanoi - gives advice: "Students need to practice with problems related to real life, types of problem solving by setting up equations, systems of equations, problems about production and management, or problems related to spatial geometry.
At the same time, students should practice problems related to measuring and calculating volume and area in practical situations. This helps them better understand how to apply mathematics in life."
