(HNMO) - On the evening of May 9, the first Da Nang Asian Film Festival 2023 (DANAFF I) with the theme "Asian Bridge" officially opened.
DANAFF I is held from May 9 to May 13, 2023, directed by the People's Committee of Da Nang City, chaired by the Vietnam Film Promotion and Development Association (VFDA), in coordination with the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang City and other departments, branches, organizations and individuals at home and abroad.
Attending the opening ceremony were Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung; Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department Tran Thanh Lam; Chairman of the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts Nguyen The Ky; leaders of Da Nang city and relevant agencies and units.
At the festival, 26 Vietnamese films and 10 Asia-Pacific films will compete in two categories: “Asian Film Award” and “Vietnam Film Award”. The jury, consisting of many experts in the field of Vietnamese and international cinema, will evaluate and select 12 official awards.
Vietnamese cinema competed in the category of "Vietnam Film Awards" with many famous films, such as: Mrs. Nu's House, You and Trinh, The Dark Night, Thanh Soi - Wild Cuckoos in the Night, 1990, Mementori - Land... In the category of "Asian Film Awards" also gathered many outstanding films of Asian cinema: White House (co-produced by Cambodia, France, China and Qatar), AbeNida (Philippines), Gangwon-do (Korea), World War III (Iran), Muru (New Zealand), Stranger Relatives (Japan)...
This is the first time Da Nang has hosted an international film festival. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Le Trung Chinh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee emphasized: This is an international event in the field of cinema, organized with the desire to further build the event brand, affirming Da Nang's position as "Asia's leading festival event destination". The organizing committee hopes that DANAFF will become an annual event, an attractive film party that brings together cinema and artistic values for the public, thereby contributing to the development of the cinema and cultural industry in Vietnam in general, and Da Nang in particular.
For the “Vietnamese Film Competition” category, the President of the Jury is director, screenwriter, producer Victor Vu, with members of the Jury including: People's Artist Lan Huong; director, producer, screenwriter Aditya Assarat (Thailand); producer Yulia Evina Bhara (Indonesia) and screenwriter Tran Khanh Hoang. For the NETPAC award, the President of the Jury is Ms. Bina Paul - Co-Chairwoman of NETPAC.
For the “Asian Film Competition” category, the President of the Jury is Ms. Moon So-ri, a Korean film actress, director and screenwriter. Members of the Jury include: People's Artist Nhu Quynh; director, producer and screenwriter Phan Dang Di (Vietnam); director and screenwriter Adilkhan Yerzhanov (Kazakhstan) and Mr. Stephen Jenner, Vice President of Communications for the Asia-Pacific region, Motion Picture Association of America.
Along with the screening of outstanding films, many other activities will take place on the sidelines of the festival. These include a 3-night outdoor film screening program at APEC Sculpture Park; red carpet activities; a program to exchange famous artists with audiences; a workshop on “Building a favorable filmmaking environment in Da Nang”; a workshop on “Japanese cinema - successful experiences and directions for cooperation in production with Vietnam”; a workshop on “Nurturing talent” with 2 basic and advanced acting classes; a program to visit Da Nang's scenic spots and the ancient town of Hoi An (Quang Nam province).
