On the afternoon of September 18, Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Dai inspected the recovery of the consequences of storm No. 3 affecting agricultural production in Me Linh district. This is the locality with the largest vegetable area in Hanoi, accounting for more than 13% of the total vegetable output supplied to the entire city.
In Dong Cao village field (Trang Viet commune, Me Linh district), it was recorded that the flood caused by storm No. 3 had left only mud in the field. Up to now, the water has receded in most of the cultivated area; farmers have also urgently started to restore production.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong’s household (Thong Dong Cao) has 7 sao of land growing various vegetables. During the recent flood, her family’s entire agricultural area was submerged by the Red River for many days, leading to a “total loss”, with estimated damage of about 30 - 40 million VND.
“I am almost 60 years old this year, but I have never seen the Red River rise so high, causing serious flooding like the recent flood. Now we have to start over again…” - Ms. Hong sadly said.
Dong Cao village is considered the largest vegetable granary of Me Linh district, and is also the place that supplies hundreds of tons of vegetables and fruits to the Hanoi market every day. Therefore, the focus on restoring this vegetable growing area is of special interest to Me Linh district.
Chairman of Me Linh District People's Committee Hoang Anh Tuan said that currently, the local government is directing the Economic Department, Agricultural Service Center, and Trang Viet Commune People's Committee to focus on supporting people in preparing the land for new crop planting. In particular, focusing on instructing people to use short-term vegetable varieties for early harvest, ensuring supply to the market.
According to Director of Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Dai, during storm No. 3 and the floods after the storm, the entire city had over 50,000 hectares of production area for the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop affected in productivity. Of which, there are about 30,000 hectares of rice, nearly 3,000 hectares of vegetables, the rest are other crops...
Immediately after receiving information about storm No. 3, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directed specialized departments to have response plans and timely solutions. After the storm and flood, many localities took drastic actions, including Me Linh district.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dai also emphasized that, along with the proactive spirit of the localities, the farmers were also very active. Immediately after the rain stopped, the flood water receded, and the fields were no longer flooded, the farmers gathered in the fields to start repairing the damage and starting the new crop.
“For example, in Me Linh district, people are currently busy working in the fields. At this rate, in just 20-25 days, Hanoi will have a large vegetable output to supply to consumers in the capital…” - Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dai Dai emphasized.
Along with Me Linh district, currently, based on 6 directive documents of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on restoring production after floods, localities are sticking to, together with farmers in recent days, actively implementing to overcome the consequences after floods to soon stabilize agricultural production.
