Some of Vietnam's top representatives in the world's most influential university rankings in 2024
More and more schools are being ranked
At noon on June 12 (Vietnam time), Times Higher Education (THE) magazine in the UK announced the ranking of the world's most influential universities in 2024. This year, Vietnam has 13 representatives in the top, 4 more than last year. Of these, 4 new schools were ranked for the first time: Nguyen Tat Thanh, Van Lang, Lac Hong and Viet Duc Universities. As for the 9 old schools, 3 schools were promoted, 2 schools were demoted and 4 schools maintained their rankings.
Specifically, among 2,152 universities from 125 countries and territories, Nguyen Tat Thanh University is in the 301-400 group in the world and leads Vietnamese universities. Following are universities and colleges ranked 401-600, including Hanoi National University, Duy Tan University (unchanged), FPT, Ton Duc Thang, National Economics; Ton Duc Thang (upgraded from the 601-800 group) and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (downgraded from the 301-400 group).
Hanoi University of Science and Technology maintained its ranking in the 601-800 group, while Van Lang University appeared for the first time in the 801-1,000 group. Phenikaa University used to hold the 801-1,000 group, but in 2024 it dropped to the 1,001-1,500 group, equal to the Open University of Ho Chi Minh City, Lac Hong and Viet Duc. In general, most of the new schools were ranked in the lower group, with only Nguyen Tat Thanh University in the top group.
This is the 6th year THE has ranked the world's most influential universities. Notably, in recent years, Vietnam has had more and more representatives appearing in this ranking, from only Ton Duc Thang University in 2019 (in the 101-200 group), the number of schools has increased to 2 (2020), 4 (2021), 7 (2022), 9 (2023) and now 13.

Previously, in the 2024 World University Rankings, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University were both in the 601-800 group out of more than 1,900 universities, leading Vietnamese universities but falling from the 401-500 position in 2023. Hanoi National University dropped from 1,001-1,200 to 1,201-1,500. Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University were all ranked 1,501+, maintaining their rankings.
What is the ranking method?
Another notable point of the influential ranking is that it does not evaluate schools based on academic indicators such as research and teaching like other THE rankings, but revolves around the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Of which, SDG 17 (partnership for development goals) accounts for 22%.
The ranking then weights the other three SDGs in which the university is strong, each carrying a weight of 26%. The remaining 16 SDGs include good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; decent work and economic growth; reduced inequality; sustainable cities and communities; climate protection; water resources and the environment; peace, justice and strong institutions.
In addition to the general criteria of cooperation for development goals, Vietnamese universities are often ranked based on criteria such as good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; economic growth and sustainable employment; sustainable cities and communities; peace, justice and strong institutions... Notably, Phenikaa University and National Economics University are also scored on the criteria of hunger eradication.

Institut Agro (France) is the top newcomer in 2024 with 21st place, while India is the most represented country in the influential rankings with 96 units.
THE is one of the three most prestigious, experienced and influential university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). This organization started ranking universities in 2004 with QS, one year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
