According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, in the first 10 months of 2023, the total volume of goods passing through seaports is showing a positive trend. Specifically, the total volume of goods passing through ports by sea in October is estimated at nearly 7 million tons, up 27.62% over the same period. The cumulative volume in 10 months reached 624 million tons, up 3% over the same period in 2022. The volume of exports decreased slightly by about 1%, but imports grew more strongly, about 5%.
In the first 9 months of 2023, the volume of goods passing through seaports reached 564.917 million tons (excluding transit goods not handled at ports), an increase of 3%.
Of which, exports decreased by 1%, reaching 132.743 million tons; imports increased by 5%, reaching 165.342 million tons. Domestic goods also increased by 3%, reaching 264.764 million tons and transit goods reached 2,068 thousand tons.

Notably, after many months of decline, some areas have seen an increase in cargo throughput through seaports, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh, and Hai Phong. Accordingly, cargo throughput through seaports in Ho Chi Minh City increased by 2.72%; Quang Ninh increased by 4.8%; and Hai Phong increased by 0.8% over the same period.
Regarding the volume of container cargo through seaports, the volume of container cargo through seaports in the first 10 months of this year also decreased by about 3%, estimated at 20.29 million Teus.
Some areas with increased container throughput such as Dong Thap increased by 68%, Quy Nhon increased by 21.28%, Dong Nai increased by 21%; Nghe An increased by 10% compared to the same period last year. However, areas with large container throughput such as Ho Chi Minh City decreased slightly by 3.7%, Vung Tau decreased by 11%, Hai Phong decreased by 1.7%.
Some areas recorded an increase in cargo volume such as Nha Trang (up 16.86%), Nghe An (up 17%), Dong Nai (up 10%), Can Tho (up 29%), Binh Thuan (up 21%). There were areas with small cargo throughput such as Dong Thap and Thua Thien-Hue (up 59% and 44.21% respectively compared to the same period last year.
