YouTube Premium subscribers around the world are upset after Google announced a significant price increase for the service in some countries.
The ad-free video service YouTube Premium has just announced a significant price increase in many countries around the world, especially in Europe. This increase is up to nearly 40% in some regions, causing a strong wave of protests from users.
YouTube continues to increase Premium package prices in many countries |
Accordingly, in Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, the subscription price increased from €11.99 to €13.99 for single plans and from €17.99 to €25.99 for family plans. In Switzerland, the price of a single subscription increased from CHF 15.90 to CHF 17.90, while the price of a family plan increased from CHF 23.90 to CHF 33.90. Similar increases also affected a number of other regions including: Denmark, Singapore, UAE, Sweden, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Colombia and Thailand.
Google’s price hike has been met with strong opposition from users. Many people believe that the new price is too high, especially when compared to other online movie viewing services. Some users have decided to cancel their YouTube Premium subscription because they no longer feel that the service is worth the money.
In the announcement email, Google said the price increase was necessary to 'continue to provide great service and features' and 'support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube'. However, this explanation did not satisfy users, especially since this is not the first time Google has increased the price of YouTube Premium.
This price increase raises questions about the future of YouTube Premium, whether Google can introduce further price increases in other countries, even Vietnam.
