According to the Wall Street Journal , Google has invited its employees to test a new YouTube product called Playables. Currently, Playables only has one game, Stack Bounce, an interactive game where the task is to break horizontal blocks with a ball.
YouTube is reportedly looking to get into the online gaming space.
The initial source also said that other games will be added in the future and will be playable on YouTube web and YouTube apps on Android and iOS. A YouTube spokesperson shared that the company is testing the feature and has "nothing to announce" at the moment.
YouTube is currently the go-to platform for creators to livestream and share gameplay videos . The new feature is part of YouTube CEO Neal Mohan's efforts to grow the platform as advertising revenue declines.
Google's new move towards YouTube is quite similar to Netflix's in the past few years. The first games started coming to Netflix in 2021 and the service has gradually added more options for users.
A 2022 report found that Netflix games had been downloaded 23.3 million times globally from launch through August 2022. An estimated 1.7 million people play these games every day, which is less than 1% of Netflix's 221 million subscribers.
