Import and export in January 2025 decreased slightly compared to the same period due to coinciding with Lunar New Year

During the month, smuggling, trade fraud, and illegal transportation of goods across the border of consumer goods tended to increase. Especially related to firecrackers and consumer goods at the Vietnam - China and Vietnam - Laos borders to serve Tet needs; gold and currency in the southwestern border area.

The number of detected, arrested and handled cases increased by 9.6%, the value of infringing goods increased by 19.4% compared to the same period in 2024. Illegal trading and transportation of firecrackers and white sugar continued in the Central provinces and the Vietnam-Laos border.

Illegal transportation of goods without invoices or documents proving their origin is still complicated, especially for frozen foods, consumer goods, cigarettes, and tobacco leaves in the border areas of Vietnam - China and Vietnam - Cambodia.

The situation of criminal activities of transporting and illegally trading drugs and precursors across the border continues to be complicated on all routes. Especially on air routes, international post, express delivery...

These subjects take advantage of this type to transport and illegally trade drugs across the border to Vietnam and then transfer them to other countries for consumption. The concealment methods are sophisticated, often disguising drugs in candy packages, functional foods, dog and cat food, cosmetics, animal meat, etc.

Faced with the above situation, the General Department of Customs has focused on implementing the Plan for the peak period of combating smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit goods before, during and after the Lunar New Year 2025.

As a result, from December 15, 2024 to January 14, 2025, the entire Customs sector detected, arrested and handled 1,430 cases of violations of Customs laws, with an estimated value of infringing goods of VND 1,462 billion. 07 cases were transferred to other agencies for prosecution. The amount collected for the State budget was VND 95 billion.

During the Lunar New Year 2025, the Customs force presided over and coordinated with the Police and Border Guard forces to detect and arrest 04 cases of smuggling, trade fraud, and illegal transportation of goods across the border. The seized exhibits included 24.3 kg of various types of firecrackers; 16.9 kg of various types of drugs (no appraisal results yet).

Regarding the fight against drugs, from December 16, 2024 to January 15, 2025, the Customs sector presided over and coordinated with the Police and Border Guard forces to detect and arrest: 29 cases/25 subjects, of which the Customs agency presided over 08 cases. The seized evidence was 98.67 kg of various types of drugs.
