Going abroad to work as a chef or plumber, with a higher salary than a civil servant

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí10/07/2023

The information was given at a seminar on career orientation and majors for students planning to study abroad, held in Hanoi on the afternoon of July 9.

The workshop aims to help students determine the major that suits their abilities, how to choose the right school for their major, grasp the "hot" careers and have many job opportunities after graduation...

Top 10 industries with labor shortages

In her speech at the conference, Ms. Tran Phuong Hoa, founder and Director of Summit Education Organization, member of the International Study Abroad Consulting Association, gave a preliminary assessment of the situation of international students lacking information about labor occupations.

In particular, there is a lot of surprising information about some professions with good job opportunities abroad.

Citing data from the UK government website, Ms. Hoa said that the top 10 occupations with a shortage of human resources in the country last year included: Health services and elderly care; scientific research (physics, chemistry, biology); electrical, electronic, mechanical, civil engineers; architects; software design and development; programmers, software developers; IT security experts; producers, art directors; artists; veterinarians.

In Australia, according to visa data for skilled migrants, as of March 2023, the top 3 occupations in need are: Software Engineer, Business Analyst and Chef.

Some people who migrate abroad do manual labor jobs such as: cooking, fruit picking, electrical repair, plumbing repair, truck driving... it is easy to find work, with higher salaries than civil servants or office workers.

In Canada, according to the government's website, the top 10 occupations with labor shortages in the next 10 years include applied science and health.

The health group focuses on industries such as nurses, therapists, nutritionists, and medical equipment operators.

As for nursing, although the work is a bit hard, every country needs it, and the opportunity to stay and settle down is very good.

In the US, according to visa data for skilled workers, in the top 10 occupations with the highest visa application rate in 2022, there are 8 IT-related occupations and 2 other occupations. Thus, IT is a relatively safe industry for international students who want to stay in the US.

Sharing more about the majors that are easy to get jobs and settle down, Ngoc Nguyen, York University (UK) said that compared to some other countries, the settlement policy here is more difficult.

However, international students can choose majors in computer science and IT because, according to the trend, these are still majors in need of human resources.

"In general, international students should prioritize carefully finding information about the school and major. In high school, the major is a very important factor, directly related to future work, so it is necessary to invest and calculate carefully," Ngoc shared her experience.

Thuy Phan, University of Tasmania (Australia), also commented that, in terms of the labor market, some industries currently have very high demand for human resources such as technology, engineering, health sciences, education, etc.

"I'm not sure that all graduates from these majors can settle here, but there are certainly many opportunities waiting for high-quality human resources in those majors," Thuy Phan shared.

Many international students lack information about careers (Photo: T. Huyen).

Sharing more, Ms. Phuong Hoa pointed out the limitations for international students before going or when looking for job opportunities abroad, which are lack of information and lack of orientation. In fact, many families do not know what grade to orient their children from.

According to this expert, career guidance should be given to children as early as possible, even from around 8th grade.

First of all, parents need to train their children in soft skills, independence, and even let them travel to experience and explore life.

Families can talk to their children about their parents' careers, so that they can be exposed to or interact with the family's work.

If the family has its own company, parents can talk about finances: "I know many children whose families have been in business for 30 years but have never set foot in their family's factory," Ms. Hoa commented.

Regarding careers and application strategies, expert Tran Phuong Hoa suggests that students aiming to study abroad should participate in prestigious competitions and seek research opportunities while still in school.

For economics or business, students can read books, study online, participate in extracurricular activities... For social sciences, they need to read a lot and write a lot to prepare a more systematic and convincing application.

When choosing a major, if interested in highly competitive fields such as medicine or biochemistry, candidates should not "put all their eggs in one basket".

This expert suggests that candidates should submit additional applications in other countries to have more options if the competition is too fierce that year.

Another experience is to choose a school that is flexible between majors. If you don't like one major, you can switch to another more suitable major.
