Strong growth in many markets
Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that in the first 6 months of 2024, fruit and vegetable exports reached 3.5 billion USD, an increase of more than 28% over the same period in 2023. Notably, the export turnover of this item increased in most markets.
China, Thailand and South Korea are still Vietnam's major fruit and vegetable import markets. In the first half of 2024, imports from these markets increased by 30-60% compared to the same period last year. Export turnover to the Chinese market alone in the past 6 months reached about 2.2 billion USD (up 33% compared to the same period in 2023), leading the import markets for this item.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that Vietnam has officially exported more than a dozen types of fruit to the Chinese market, including: watermelon, mangosteen, durian, fresh banana, sweet potato, dragon fruit, rambutan, mango, lychee, longan, jackfruit. In particular, Vietnam and China are expected to sign a new Protocol on the export of frozen durian, passion fruit and chili in 2024. Currently, the two countries have agreed to sign the Fresh Coconut Protocol, opening up export prospects for Vietnamese coconut. These are opportunities for fruit and vegetable exports to continue to grow in the second half of this year.
Not only the Chinese market, in the past 6 months, fruit and vegetable exports to South Korea reached over 180 million USD, up 57.9% over the same period last year. Growth was also recorded in the US market with an export value of over 150 million USD, up 32.4% over the same period last year.
Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that the highlight of the fruit industry is that the export of processed products has shown an upward trend. In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam's processed fruit and vegetable products increased by 10-15% compared to the previous year. This is a positive sign for Vietnam to further expand its import market and diversify its fruit and vegetable products with high value.
Stable supply, quality assurance
Experts and managers say that quality is still a problem that businesses need to focus on to maintain growth and create great growth.
Since the beginning of the year, fruit and vegetables have been the export item that has recorded the highest growth rate in the country's agricultural sector. This industry is expected to set a new record of over 7 billion USD. However, the quality of exported fruit and vegetables is still a difficult problem that needs to be addressed in the coming time.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien
Regarding this issue, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien analyzed: the Chinese market accounts for more than 60% of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports, but recently the General Department of Customs of China announced that it would ban the import of durian from 18 growing areas and 15 packaging facilities in Vietnam due to the discovery of heavy metal residues exceeding the permitted level.
“China is currently the world’s largest durian import market. Vietnam is also the largest durian exporter to this market. However, this could also be the reason why many farmers and businesses are chasing quantity, ignoring quality,” Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien shared.
Sharing the solution, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh said that businesses need to focus on quality, because this is the key point to maintain growth and expand the market. Not only the Chinese market, the United States is also a large potential market for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. However, to bring products to the US, it is necessary to increase the added value of seasonal fruits by adding processed products such as dried fruits, fruit powder, canned products for year-round consumption; applying new technology to help extend the shelf life of fruits.
The agricultural sector has set a target of exporting 7 - 7.5 billion USD worth of fruits and vegetables in 2024, an expectation that is expected to be achieved. However, in both the short and long term, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that localities with key export fruit and vegetable groups need to plan and maintain production areas, apply high technology in all stages from planting to preliminary processing and processing, focusing on linking and developing production chains. Because only when the supply is stable and the quality is guaranteed can the export and market problems be guaranteed.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will work with localities to develop a production and export strategy for the fruit and vegetable industry. The Ministry will also coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Vietnamese trade offices abroad to regularly update new regulations and standards from import markets.
“Acumen and strict compliance with international regulations are fundamental solutions for sustainable development of all industries, including fruits and vegetables. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and related ministries and sectors will tighten management of quality and growing areas. With a large and stable supply, the quality problem needs to be effectively solved for higher growth in fruit and vegetable exports,” Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.
