Recently, doctors at Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital said they had successfully performed emergency surgery and saved the leg of a 6-year-old girl in Hau Giang province who had a broken leg due to an accident where her leg was stuck in an elevator.
The family said that because the child was focused on looking at his phone while entering the elevator at home, he accidentally got his foot stuck in the elevator door, leading to the accident. The family quickly bandaged the wound and took the child to the emergency room.

The child was admitted to the hospital in a state of shock due to blood loss, lethargy, coma, pale skin, pale mucous membranes, large skin peeling wound, open fracture of the left tibia leading to heavy bleeding, femur fracture, and unstable knee joint. Through examination, the doctors diagnosed the child with traumatic shock, acute blood loss, grade IIIB open fracture (with manifestations of large soft tissue laceration, exposed broken bone head and contaminated bone area), near amputation of the left tibia, left femur fracture, abdominal and pelvic trauma due to domestic accident.
The medical team determined that this was an emergency and activated the "internal red alert", ordering emergency surgery for the child. After surgery, the patient had crushed tissue removed, arteries and nerves carefully examined, all tendons sutured, and bones fixed.
Immediately after surgery, the patient's legs turned pink and warm, and the toes had sensation. The patient was monitored for 2 days post-operatively before being transferred to the Department of Neurosurgery - Musculoskeletal for continued treatment. The patient then underwent femoral fusion surgery. The patient was discharged from the hospital in stable health; the doctor scheduled an outpatient follow-up visit.
MSc. Dr. Le Dung, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery - Musculoskeletal, said: Children often pay little attention to surrounding risks and do not have much knowledge and skills to prevent them, so they are very susceptible to household accidents that cause dangerous injuries. Therefore, families and relatives when directly caring for children need to pay attention to ensuring safety and comprehensively assessing situations that can be dangerous for children.
In case of an unfortunate accident, the family needs to closely monitor the child's state of consciousness and any unusual symptoms. If there are serious injuries, the child should be taken immediately to a specialized hospital for examination and timely treatment.
