According to MacRumors , Apple has acknowledged that a small number of wireless phone chargers built into some recent BMW and Toyota Supra models may temporarily disable the NFC capabilities of the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, or 15 Pro Max. The memo does not provide a specific reason for the issue.
The NFC chip in iPhones powers features like Apple Pay and digital car keys. Users affected by the issue may see an “Apple Pay Failed to Set Up” error message in the Wallet app, even if they’ve already set up Apple Pay.
Apple says the issue will be addressed in a software update later this year. Since the memo was released hours after iOS 17.1 was released, it seems likely that the fix will require a subsequent update, such as iOS 17.1.1 or iOS 17.2. In the meantime, Apple is advising affected customers to stop using wireless charging in their cars.
There are a number of complaints about this issue on forums like MacRumors and X, but it’s unclear how widespread the problem is. Affected customers say their iPhones go into recovery mode with a blank screen and the NFC chip no longer works after the device restarts. There’s no way for customers to fix the problem, so they have to go to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Apple says technicians can try to reboot the NFC chip in affected iPhone 15s using a software tool part of Apple Service Toolkit 2. If that step doesn't resolve the issue, the company recommends technicians perform a hardware repair.
