The National Outstanding Athletes and Coaches Election is an event initiated by Vietnam Sports Newspaper, first held in 1978, with the aim of honoring athletes and coaches with outstanding achievements during the year.
Shooter Pham Quang Huy
According to the results just announced by the Department of Sports and Physical Training, shooter Pham Quang Huy with a total score of 985 points won the vote for the title of National Outstanding Athlete 2023. The runner-up was athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh with 814 points. These are results that are not beyond the expectations of experts and fans.
2023 marks the breakthrough of many athletes with impressive achievements at the SEA Games and Asian Games. However, the two most prominent athletes are still Pham Quang Huy (shooting) and Nguyen Thi Oanh (athletics). These are also the two athletes competing most fiercely for the top spot in the list of the top 10 best athletes of the year.
The historic moment of Vietnamese shooting was recorded at the 19th Asian Games on September 28, 2023 when shooter Pham Quang Huy excelled and became the first shooter to bring home the precious gold medal at the largest arena in the continent.
Vietnam women's football team won the title of Outstanding Sports Team of 2023
With a score of 240.5, Quang Huy defeated shooter Lee Won Ho (Korea) in the final round to win the first gold medal for Vietnamese shooting at the Asian Games.
Meanwhile, athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh competed with great success at the 32nd SEA Games with 4 gold medals, and 1 gold medal at the Asian Indoor Championship. The image of a petite girl but possessing extraordinary inner strength, defying difficulties to successfully conquer the first place in the two long-distance events of 1,500 m and 3,000 m obstacle course left many impressions.
The success of Pham Quang Huy and Nguyen Thi Oanh has created inspiration for Vietnamese sports, in the context that the Vietnamese sports industry is facing many difficulties and challenges.
In addition to the two leading positions, the remaining 8 athletes in the top 10 outstanding athletes of 2023 are also very outstanding faces. The athletes include Nguyen Thi That (cycling); Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming), Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton), Nguyen Van Khanh Phong (gymnastics), Nguyen Thi Huyen (athletics), Tran Thi Ngoc Yen (badminton), Trinh Thu Vinh (shooting), Bao Phuong Vinh (billiards).
Meanwhile, there are no football players (both male and female) on this list.
Athlete Le Van Cong won the title of Outstanding Disabled Athlete of 2023
In the Outstanding Coach category, the teacher of shooter Pham Quang Huy, expert Park Chung-gun, became the No. 1 Coach in Vietnam in 2023 with a high score of 419 points. Behind him were Coaches Mai Duc Chung (Vietnam women's football team), Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet (volleyball), Coach Tran Thi Vui (soccer), and Nguyen Hoang Ngan (katate).
A new point of this election is that after 45 years of organization, this is the first time the election has added the category of Outstanding Sports Team to honor athlete groups with excellent performance in team events (from 3 athletes or more).
This helps athletes in this competition not to be disadvantaged in the voting. By winning a ticket to the 2023 Women's World Cup finals, the Vietnamese women's football team won the title of "Outstanding Sports Team".
In the voting results for the most outstanding disabled sports athlete, weightlifter Le Van Cong ranked first with 478 points. Coach Le Quang Thai (weightlifting) came first in the category of most outstanding disabled sports coach in 2023.
