Mr. Bao said: “My family used to mainly grow honey oranges, but after a long time of harvesting, the trees began to age and had many pests and diseases, so the yield was not high, plus the price was unstable. Therefore, to grow a type of tree that requires little care and can be harvested for a long time...".

Mr. Bao learned about and visited some large mangosteen gardens in Rach Ong (Dong Thanh commune, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province) and some neighboring localities.
He found that the mangosteen variety was suitable for his family's garden soil conditions. By early 2015, Mr. Bao had bought 35 mangosteen seedlings to plant on an area of 3000m2 of his garden.
To make a living from mangosteen, Mr. Bao must think long-term. In the early years, he intercropped many types of trees such as Thai jackfruit and seedless lemon to maximize the area and to use the short term to support the long term.
To make the mangosteen tree have good fruit to harvest early, after harvesting a crop, he starts to fertilize and add mud, let the tree grow well and then tighten the water.
Usually in the beginning of the 8th lunar month, after about 2 months of water shortage, the mangosteen tree blooms.
Mangosteen tree from flowering to harvest is about 6 months.
With 35 mangosteen trees that are 9 years old and have produced fruit, this year is the third crop. For over a month now, Mr. Bao has harvested 1.2 tons of mangosteen.
The highest selling price of mangosteen is 60,000 VND/kg, the lowest price is also over 30,000 VND/kg.
This year, according to Mr. Bao's assessment, his family's mangosteen garden bears more fruit than last year.
Mangosteens are mainly harvested at the end of April and begin to bloom at the beginning of the fifth lunar month. The price of mangosteens purchased at the garden is about 50,000 VND/kg (equivalent to last year).
After the mangosteen crop, Mr. Bao estimated that his family earned over 60 million VND, after deducting family expenses, the family still had a profit of over 40 million VND.
Mangosteen is considered the "Queen of tropical fruits", a specialty fruit with beautiful appearance, delicious and nutritious flesh that is very popular with consumers.
Currently, mangosteen is a crop chosen by many farmers in Cai Tac town, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province to grow to enrich their families. Income from mangosteen trees brings an average profit of over 150 million VND/ha.
