"Box office king" Thai Hoa: "Million dollar" actor, 25 years without a title?

Thai Hoa shines in many blockbuster films, is highly appreciated for his expertise, modest and simple personality, but until now he still has not had the title of Meritorious Artist.

The brilliant career of the "box office king"

Thai Hoa started his career on stage and acted in several television series in the late 1990s, but only truly became a star when he moved into cinema.

Without the outstanding appearance of a "handsome guy", Thai Hoa still shines and creates a strong impression in the roles he participates in. From 2010 to 2015, every movie Thai Hoa appeared in was a big hit in terms of revenue.

He is known as the "box office king", "million dollar actor" after a series of hit romantic comedies, starting from Let's Think Tomorrow (2010), to Long Ruoi (2011), Marry Now, Don't Miss (2012), Teo Em (2013), Bloody Heart (2014)...

At that time, Thai Hoa was loved for his charming, lively and restrained comedy style. In De Mai Tinh, the male artist successfully portrayed the humorous, arrogant but emotional character "Chi Hoi".

Although a supporting character, the role of "Sister Hoi" was so popular that director Charlie Nguyen made her the main character, continuing the film with the title De Hoi Tinh (2014). This is also one of the first images of homosexuals to leave an impression in Vietnamese films and is a memorable milestone in Thai Hoa's career.

In Thai Hoa's filmography, he not only left his mark with silly, naive comedic roles (like in the films Long Ruoi, Teo Em, My Husband...), but also conquered the audience with his strong acting and colorful transformations.

Not limited to a familiar character type, the actor continuously tries his hand at diverse roles and novel scripts. Typically, with the role of Phan Bat Binh in Blood Moon Party (2020), the male artist transformed into a character with a righteous, grumpy appearance and many hidden inner thoughts.

In recent years, Thai Hoa has been quite picky about his scripts. In an interview with the media in April, the 7X artist said he prefers acting in TV dramas because he feels like he can live longer with the role. He wants to take on a heavy role with a lot of experience while he is still at the age of his career's peak.

Therefore, Thai Hoa invests in tragic roles that carry the weight of fate. Although he rarely acts in films, each time he returns, the actor leaves an impression thanks to his realistic acting, from appearance to inner self.

Thai Hoa's recent roles in Cay Tao No Hoa (2021), Me Rom (2022), Con Nhot Mot Chong (2023)... all touched the hearts of viewers and brought tears to their eyes.

In particular, when Thai Hoa took on the role of the eldest brother Ngoc in Cay Tao No Hoa, many viewers commented that even though it was a television series, Thai Hoa's acting "reached cinematic quality".

Famous for his many comedic roles, with a face that is said to "make you laugh just by looking at it", Thai Hoa successfully portrayed the character Ngoc, who is rough, miserable, and struggles to make a living. The humble and different star

Thai Hoa is a rare name that has succeeded in many fields of art, but is considered to live a modest and simple life. Many times, the actor admitted that he "is not suited to showbiz".

In recent years, he has rarely appeared at entertainment events. Except for acting in movies and promoting movies every time there is a new project, Thai Hoa almost never accepts press interviews, does not attend award ceremonies, and does not use social networks.

In 2019, there was a period when Thai Hoa lost inspiration and lost direction in his career. He said he was afraid of standing in front of the camera, constantly asking himself "what is the purpose of doing this job?".

The actor became withdrawn, not wanting to meet or communicate with anyone. Later, thanks to his wife's encouragement, Thai Hoa attended psychological counseling and meditation courses and returned to devoting himself wholeheartedly to art.

In September, Thai Hoa won two categories: Best Actor in a Movie (as Xin in Con Nhót nhớt Chong) and Best Actor in a Television Series (as Mo Gu in Me Rom) at the Golden Kite Awards. However, he was absent from the awards ceremony for personal reasons.

Although he is a famous name, a "guarantee" of box office success, Thai Hoa always considers carefully each time he is sought after by producers and directors. He also never calls himself a "box office king", "box office god" or feels pressured because he is a "million dollar actor".

Thai Hoa believes that art is a long journey, with successes and failures. He prefers people to see him as a normal actor rather than any other title.

Sharing with the media in April, Thai Hoa said: "I am not the king of the box office. It is wrong to call me that, because the films I act in have losses, not always profits.

From the moment I entered the drama school until now, my biggest pressure is still outside the filming set. When I live fully in every moment in front of the camera, that is the most important thing."

Regarding the fact that he has not acted in many films in recent years, Thai Hoa said that he wanted to rest and travel here and there. The actor confirmed that he let himself be "lulled to sleep" by compliments. After many years in the profession, Thai Hoa has noticed that the audience's level of appreciation is increasing. Therefore, he tells himself that he must always try to do better and be more creative.

After more than 20 years of career, Thai Hoa does not dare to admit that he has reached the "peak" but always wants to improve and develop further. It is worth mentioning that although he has won many awards and made his mark in many roles, from television, drama to cinema, he has not applied for the title of Meritorious Artist or People's Artist.

Many audiences regret that Thai Hoa still has "no title" despite his many contributions to the profession. However, many fans also commented that he is "an artist in the hearts of the audience", not needing any title to be conferred.

Regarding his current life, Thai Hoa said he feels fulfilled and satisfied. "Being an actor doesn't mean you can be rich, but I don't feel like I and my family lack anything," Thai Hoa said in an interview in October 2022.
