Passenger bus plunges into abyss: 'I jumped up to hug my dad, now he's gone'

With a dazed face, Ms. Vu Thi Yen - the victim of the passenger bus that plunged into the abyss on the La Son-Tuy Loan highway, said: "My father and I were traveling together. When the bus fell, I stood up and called out to my father and hugged him. Now I sit here, knowing that my father has passed away."
Meeting Ms. Vu Thi Yen (born in 1984, Dak Nong) at Da Nang Hospital on the morning of January 23, Ms. Yen was one of 20 lucky passengers who were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment in time. However, her relative unfortunately died in the passenger bus accident that plunged into the abyss on the La Son-Tuy Loan highway .
Ms. Yen was shocked when she recounted the moment the bus plunged into the abyss. Recalling the terrifying moment, Ms. Yen said that she was sleeping when she suddenly saw the passenger bus swerve, after a "bang" the bus rolled several times and plunged into the abyss. "When I opened my eyes, the bus had fallen into the abyss. The door was broken, there were only 4 people in the bus," Ms. Yen recalled. Among those trapped was her father. "The two of us were traveling together, my father was sitting in the back. When the bus fell, I jumped up and called my father. I tried to pull the chair that was pressing down on me, and hugged my father. I sat there, only knowing that my father had passed away," Ms. Yen choked. 3 passengers have been discharged from the hospital. Mr. Le Duc Nhan, Director of Da Nang Hospital, said that the unit is actively treating the passengers who were injured in the bus accident that plunged into the abyss on the La Son - Tuy Loan highway. According to the Director of Da Nang Hospital, 12 victims of the accident were admitted and treated at the hospital. After receiving the patients, the hospital mobilized all the doctors, nurses and equipment to examine and provide emergency care. Up to now, the treatment of the patients has been stable. “Of the 12 victims, 3 were slightly injured and were discharged after being treated. The remaining patients with broken arms and legs were transferred to the Trauma Surgery and Thoracic Surgery departments for treatment. Victims of the bus accident are being treated at Da Nang hospital. There is a victim with serious injuries due to broken ribs, collapsed lung, broken pelvis, and traumatic brain injury who is being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit," Dr. Le Duc Nhan informed. Providing more information about the health status of the victims, Dr. Nguyen Duong, Department of Neurosurgery (Da Nang Hospital) said: The department is receiving 6 cases of patients. Currently, the patients are being monitored and treated, and their health status is stable. There is a patient whose family member has died so she asked to go home. Currently, there are only 5 patients left in the department. "The patients are not only traumatized but also psychologically affected. Some are psychologically confused because their relatives have died, some have had to crawl up from the bottom of a deep abyss. Currently, the patients are being treated well," Dr. Duong said. In addition to the victims being treated at Da Nang Hospital, 6 people were transferred to Hoa Vang District Medical Center and Lien Chieu District Medical Center for treatment. Previously, at around 0:30 on January 23, at Km36+400 of La Son - Hoa Lien Expressway (in Hoa Bac Commune, Hoa Vang District, Da Nang City), a 45-seat passenger bus with license plate number 47B-010.67 running on the Dak Lak - Hai Duong route, driven by Phuong Thanh Tung (born in 1988, residing in Eaka District, Dak Lak Province), carrying 22 people (19 passengers, 3 bus staff) plunged into a deep ravine. The accident killed 2 people and injured 20 people who were taken to the emergency room. According to the police, the initial cause of the accident was due to rain and fog limiting visibility, and the driver falling asleep, causing the accident.
