Attending the event were Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu, Vice President of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Abbot of Tam Chuc Pagoda and Bai Dinh Pagoda, along with many delegates and thousands of monks, nuns and Buddhists.
Attending the Vu Lan ceremony at Tam Chuc Pagoda, delegates, monks, nuns and Buddhists from all over the world reviewed the traditions of the great festival. Accordingly, the Vu Lan ceremony originated from the story of the Great Filial Piety of Maudgalyayana Bodhisattva, who relied on the combined efforts of monks from all over the world to save his mother from hell.
Therefore, Vu Lan festival is a day to remember the merits of parents and ancestors and is considered by Buddhism as an important holiday in the 7th lunar month every year. Vu Lan festival is one of the beautiful traditional ceremonies of the Vietnamese people, held on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month every year. This is an opportunity for each person to slow down, love more, express their feelings and take practical actions to repay their parents, their great kindness and share with those around them.
At the Vu Lan ceremony at Tam Chuc Pagoda, the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, the leaders of the Central Institute, along with delegates, monks, nuns, and Buddhists performed traditional Buddhist rituals such as the Vu Lan and Mu Lien repentance prayers and making spiritual vows to follow the Buddha; the flower offering ceremony, and the rose pinning ceremony to commemorate each person's parents.
Vu Lan Festival is not only a Buddhist ritual but has become a common holiday for children to express their filial piety to their parents; to remember, pray for and show gratitude to those who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
Vu Lan is a beautiful tradition of the Vietnamese people, originating from gratitude and repaying the teachings of Buddha and following the filial example of Venerable Maudgalyayana (an outstanding disciple of Buddha who saved his mother from hell).
Vu Lan is also a day to express the warm human affection in human life, imbued with spiritual and moral culture, human virtue culture, looking towards the sacred and noble origin, the closest of which is the image of father and mother.
