On October 4, Kien Hai District Medical Center (Kien Giang) announced that the locality has just reported the results of the investigation into the case of 23 students suspected of food poisoning at Kien Hai District Secondary and High School.
The interdisciplinary food safety inspection team said that the canteen at the school is owned by Mr. Nguyen Van Chon. At the time of the inspection, the team found that Mr. Chon's canteen was not hygienic, and around the processing area there was a sanitary facility for the incinerator of domestic waste in a residential area with many flies.
The water source for cooking at the above canteen is not hygienic (well water is not filtered); there is no three-step food inspection book; no daily food sample storage and no protective gear for employees when preparing food.
In particular, Mr. Chon could not prove the origin of some purchased foods such as chicken, pork, pork skin, additives and colorants... to prepare food.
The inspection team suspected that the food that caused 23 students at the school to have fever, heat and diarrhea was chicken rice and pork rib rice.
The inspection team recommended that the school board consider moving the school canteen to another area to ensure food safety and hygiene. Strengthen guidance for food establishments selling food to students to ensure food safety and hygiene, strictly manage the origin of food ingredients, hygiene in processing stages and food sample storage... to ensure safety.
Previously, Tuoi Tre Online reported that on September 23, the People's Committee of Kien Hai district recorded that many students of Kien Hai district's secondary and high schools had breakfast, including: sweet and sour chicken rice, rice with ribs, fish cake bread, vermicelli... at the canteen. After that, 23/47 students at this school were suspected of food poisoning when they showed symptoms of fever, heat, diarrhea, stomachache and vomiting. Of these, 8 students were transferred by their families to Kien Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for treatment.
Regarding the above issue, the locality has decided to temporarily suspend the above canteen to investigate the cause.
