Viettel celebrates 35 years of tradition and receives First Class Fatherland Protection Medal

On May 31, in Hanoi, the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group (Viettel) held a ceremony to celebrate its 35th anniversary (June 1, 1989 - June 1, 2024) and receive the First Class Fatherland Protection Medal.

Previously, Viettel received the First Class Independence Medal in 2019, the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces in 2014, and the title of Hero of Labor in 2007. From a small company specializing in hiring and installing high-tower telecommunications works, with a row of level 4 houses, a car and 10 people, after 35 years, Viettel has become the largest telecommunications company in Vietnam, an important economic group of the country with a brand value of nearly 9 billion USD, the number 1 brand in Southeast Asia, 15th in the ranking of 150 networks with the largest brand value globally. Over 35 years of business, Viettel has developed its business in 4 strategic pillars: Domestic and foreign telecommunications, information technology solutions, high-tech industry, logistics-e-commerce and other services. Over the past 35 years, Viettel's total consolidated revenue has reached over VND2.2 million billion, with pre-tax profit of nearly VND540 trillion. Viettel has always been the leading enterprise in contributing to the state budget, with an accumulated total of over VND433 trillion to date.

At the ceremony to celebrate its 35th anniversary, Viettel Group was honored to receive the First Class Fatherland Protection Medal. Accordingly, after 17 years of persistently pursuing the defense industry, Viettel has researched, mastered and produced more than 60 product lines in 10 technical weapons and equipment sectors for the army, ensuring security and autonomy, helping many military branches advance straight to modernity, contributing to enhancing the national defense military potential. Viettel's special achievements are also recognized in the field of cyber security. Specifically, Viettel, together with Command 86 and functional agencies, invested resources, researched, built and introduced solutions and tools to contribute to controlling Vietnam's sovereignty in cyberspace. Viettel discovered more than 400 zero-day security vulnerabilities (vulnerabilities that have never been announced), won the world's largest security vulnerability exploitation competition Pwn2Own, and prevented an average of more than 50,000 global hacker attacks on its system each year. Viettel's cybersecurity team has contributed to bringing Vietnam into the world's top 30 countries capable of mastering over 95% of cybersecurity products. This is the foundation to protect Vietnam's prosperity, the basis for Vietnamese intelligence to reach out to the world. In key areas, in its 35-year journey, Viettel has made many marks. Viettel has built a large and modern telecommunications infrastructure with a fiber optic cable backbone system that wraps 9 times around the earth, an internet of things infrastructure, a 5G network infrastructure, and data centers ready for artificial intelligence development. Promoting research and application of new technologies, Viettel has created a breakthrough product system, built many platforms to apply solutions in the fields of finance, healthcare, education, transportation, logistics, smart urban operation centers, actively contributing to the national digital transformation strategy. In particular, revenue from foreign investment activities reached more than 3 billion USD, maintaining a high growth rate for 7 consecutive years, 5 times higher than the industry average in the world, bringing in an annual foreign currency revenue transferred to Vietnam of up to 500 million USD. From the latter position, Viettel has risen to the top in 7/10 markets, in all 3 continents of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. At the event, Chairman and General Director of the Group, Major General Tao Duc Thang expressed his deep gratitude to generations of leaders of the Party, State, ministries, departments, and branches, generations of Group leaders through the periods, domestic and foreign partners, to more than 110 million customers worldwide and relatives of Viettel staff who have always supported and energized Viettel to achieve the achievements it has today. Major General Tao Duc Thang affirmed: "Viettel's 35-year journey is entirely within the historical flow of nearly 40 years of national innovation. Viettel is proud to be a positive factor contributing to the development of the industry and the country. Vietnam, including Viettel, is accompanying the world on the ship of the 4.0 industrial revolution. This is an opportunity that will not appear a second time and Viettel needs to grasp it to continue nurturing great aspirations, high goals, and opening new, bigger doors for tomorrow. We promise to be determined and make efforts to continue building Viettel, accompanying the country and its people, contributing with the Government to strongly develop science and technology, innovation, and become a global high-tech industrial group, pioneering and leading in the two major transformations of the era: digital transformation and green transformation."
