Viettel officially launches 5G network in Vietnam

On October 15, in Hanoi, the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group (Viettel) officially launched the 5G mobile network. This is an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Viettel's official mobile service business and to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024). Attending the event were Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of National Defense .

Attending the event was Major General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and General Director of Viettel . With this event, Viettel is the first enterprise to officially provide 5G services in Vietnam. Officially launched just 6 months after receiving the license to use the 2,600 MHz frequency, Viettel's 5G network at the time of launch had more than 6,500 BTS stations, covering 100% of the capitals of 63/63 provinces, cities, industrial parks, tourist areas, seaports, airports, hospitals, universities.

Viettel's 5G network can reach speeds from 700Mbps to 1Gb, 10 times faster than 4G, and has a latency of almost 0. Viettel's 5G network is deployed simultaneously on both 5G NSA (non stand alone) and 5G SA (stand alone) architecture platforms. Viettel successfully deployed the 5G NSA network in 2019, however, 5G SA is the real 5G network and is completely independent of current 4G technology. Compared to the 5G NSA network, in addition to providing high-speed data transmission services, 5G SA also meets the requirement of super low latency, about 1ms, much better than the 5G NSA network and 20 times faster than traditional 4G, helping to provide services that require instant response such as self-driving cars, remote surgery, remote control in smart factories, virtual reality classrooms, etc.

Viettel also announced 11 prepaid packages and 8 postpaid packages for individual customers. In particular, with 5G Viettel, each customer will have their own digital space, all 5G packages are provided with free Cloud storage and TV360 4K TV viewing service by Viettel. Customers who own 5G-enabled phones can use the service immediately without having to change SIM. At the event, Major General Tao Duc Thang said that Viettel quickly researched and tested 5th generation mobile technology and successfully connected the first 5G call in May 2019 with a speed equivalent to the world's 5G network.

From being behind, approaching 2G, 3G, 4G technologies that had been popular in the world from 8 to 13 years before, this is also the first time Vietnam can go hand in hand with the world in applying the latest technology of the 4.0 revolution, becoming one of the countries that successfully tested it the earliest and the first network operator to test 5G services in 63 provinces/cities. By mastering many important core network systems, Viettel has brought Vietnam into the Top 5 countries that can produce 5G network equipment, only after Sweden, Finland, China and South Korea. This demonstrates Viettel's great efforts and determination for Vietnam to continue to be in the group of leading countries in the world in commercializing 5G.

Speaking at the event, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of National Defense acknowledged and highly appreciated Viettel's efforts and achievements in the past time, and at the same time suggested that, in order to successfully complete the assigned tasks in the coming time, Viettel needs to regularly and seriously grasp the policies and directions of the Party, State, and Army on combining economy with national defense, developing telecommunications services and defense industry; promote the combined strength, continue to innovate thinking and actions; proactively review, concretize, build, and deploy projects and plans to develop telecommunications services and defense industry in accordance with reality.
