Hanoi Midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc scored a super overhead kick, helping Viettel defeat Hanoi 2-1 in the 1/8 round of the 2023 National Cup.

The capital battle between the two most recent V-League champions was intense with back-and-forth action. Despite being underestimated, the timely brilliance of the stars helped Viettel win. On the contrary, Hanoi only scored one goal in the first half thanks to Pham Tuan Hai, so they could not defend the title they won last year.

The highlight of Viettel's victory was the two super goals scored in each half. In the 13th minute, from Duy Thuong's header, Hoang Duc leaned over and hooked the ball, opening the score before the surprise of Hanoi's defense. The lead was a worthy reward for Viettel, because they entered the game proactively and caused many problems for Bui Tan Truong's goal.
After falling behind, Hanoi poured forward to find an equalizer. But like the 0-1 home loss to SLNA in round 13 of the V-League on July 2, their attacks were quite disjointed. The absence of captain Nguyen Van Quyet due to suspension clearly affected the playing style of the team under coach Bozidar Bandovic. However, Hanoi still showed the mettle of a top club. In the 31st minute, taking advantage of the space when Viettel's defense was high, Tuan Hai broke the offside trap to receive a long pass, before lofting the ball over goalkeeper Van Phong.
Both teams had chances to score more goals in the remainder of the first half. Hoang Duc hooked the ball a second time, but it went over the bar. On the other side of the goal, center back Bui Tien Dung saved the ball on the goal line after Caion Herlison's shot.

In the second half, Viettel continued to play well and had two chances from Tien Dung's headers. Hanoi responded fiercely with Do Hung Dung's long-range shot hitting the crossbar, followed by Nguyen Van Tung's turn and finish. However, in the stalemate, Viettel knew how to deal with their opponents. Substitute striker Jeferson Elias dribbled the ball outside the penalty area and then fired a cannonball into the near corner, leaving Tan Truong helpless.
In this situation, Hanoi players thought that Jeferson let the ball touch his hand when controlling Hoang Duc's pass. But the referee judged that the Viettel foreign player's action was valid.
Unable to penetrate Viettel's well-organized defense in the remaining time, Hanoi suffered their first defeat against this opponent since the first leg of V-League 2021. This was only the second time Viettel defeated Hanoi since they were promoted to V-League in 2019. After 13 encounters, they lost eight times and drew three.
Viettel's opponent in the quarterfinals will be the winner of the match between Hanoi Police Club and Nam Dinh.
