2023 is a year of many economic fluctuations, but for Mr. David Duong, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of California Waste Solutions (CWS - USA) and Vietnam Waste Treatment Company Limited (VWS), Chairman of the Vietnam - America Business Association (VABA), it is a year of many milestones. He has once again contributed to building an impressive image of Vietnam in the eyes of the international community in general and the United States in particular.

2023 is a year of many challenges for the business community and domestic and foreign investors. For you, what made you most satisfied in the past year?

I always keep in mind that I am a son of Vietnam. Therefore, I always take advantage of every opportunity to introduce Vietnam to American politicians and businesses, to bring the best things to my homeland, create jobs for Vietnamese people, and bring foreign currency back to build the country.

Cherishing the dream of bringing US politicians and investors back to explore direct investment cooperation opportunities in Vietnam is one of my biggest wishes that has been fulfilled in 2023. During his working trip to Vietnam, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao assessed that CWS Company is the leading enterprise in waste treatment in the California region. CWS is also a symbol in California of Vietnamese Americans returning to their homeland to invest and do business.

The trip contributed to opening the door to the future, promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation between localities of the two countries Vietnam and the United States.

Returning to VWS’s project in Vietnam, during his recent visit to Vietnam, he shared that, in difficult circumstances, entrepreneurs must be more alert in analyzing and finding their own path. Could you tell us what VWS’s own path is in Vietnam?

As an entrepreneur, you must always be creative, diligent in finding new things, finding things that few people do or that no one has done yet to create opportunities for yourself.

For example, for the Waste-to-Energy Conversion Project located at the Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Complex (Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), at the request of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, we have carefully prepared and submitted the Waste-to-Energy Conversion Project with a capacity of 3,000 tons/day and an investment capital of more than 400 million USD. After a long process of research and survey in many countries, we decided to choose Japanese technology for this project. The partner received support from the Japanese Government, so it will contribute to reducing the cost of waste treatment from incineration technology. This is also the superiority of the Project.

What about the CWS Project in the United States, sir?

We have found a new direction in waste treatment in the United States. Specifically, we are researching the use of paper and trees from organic waste to produce energy pellets to replace coal. Its benefits also help reduce landfill waste and reduce the cost of waste treatment with incineration technology. In addition to the United States, I plan to deploy the production of these energy pellets in Vietnam in the near future.

In addition, we have just completed a container house factory with a total investment of 25 million USD for the first phase, located in Mexico. This apartment product will be provided by us to the states of the United States to solve the homeless situation, which is highly appreciated by representatives of city governments and the Governor of California.

In your role as Chairman of VABA, what do you look forward to most?

No matter what the circumstances or position, my greatest wish is to contribute as much as possible to my homeland and country. For nearly 20 years of investing in the country, I have always focused on the community. In Ho Chi Minh City, every year, we use billions of dong from the budget to take care of the poor... In Long An, we also established the David Duong Community Support Fund. Over the past 10 years, the Fund has helped thousands of poor people have capital to increase production to escape poverty and become rich.

As Chairman of VABA, I have more opportunities to connect overseas Vietnamese and businessmen, calling on them to return home to invest and import and export more goods between Vietnam and the United States.

What is your biggest wish for the Lunar New Year 2024, sir?

Every Tet holiday, I always look forward to returning to my hometown to celebrate the new year with my relatives, family members, and employees who have been with me for many years. I also always remember and “crave” Vietnamese dishes that are deeply imprinted in my childhood memories, which can only be enjoyed during Tet. I hope that the poor people in my hometown will have a warm and united Tet. I will also bring gifts to poor families so that they can have a warmer spring.
