More than 23,700 Vietnamese students are studying in Taiwan, as of the end of 2022, the largest in the international student community here.

The Taiwan Higher Education Exhibition took place on October 13 in Hanoi, with the participation of 44 schools. The information booths of the schools were divided into two areas, packed with students, university students, and parents coming to learn more.

Mr. Chu Da Minh, Head of Education, Taiwan Education Data Center in Vietnam, said that last year, more than 23,700 Vietnamese people studied in Taiwan, an increase of 26% compared to 2021. Of these, about 16,000 people followed degree programs, more than 7,000 studied Chinese language programs or participated in exchange programs.

According to Mr. Chu, Vietnam is currently the country with the largest number of international students in Taiwan, followed by Indonesia and Malaysia. The fields with the most Vietnamese students studying are Business and Management (undergraduate level), technology, engineering, especially semiconductors (master's and doctoral levels).

Mr. Thach Thuy Ky, Chief Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vietnam, said that more and more Vietnamese students are studying in Taiwan, not only because of the quality of education but also because Taiwan has achieved top levels in fields such as engineering, management and medicine. Students can choose to study in Chinese or English, or both.

Most schools have simple entry requirements. In terms of foreign languages, students must have a minimum IELTS score of 5.0, or a TOCFL (Chinese language certificate with 6 levels, from A1 to C2) of A1 or higher. Undergraduate applicants need a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation, while master's applicants must have a university degree.

Ms. Chen Ying Chieh, representative of National Taiwan University (NTU), the number 1 university in Taiwan and ranked 69th in the world, said that the school requires applicants to have IELTS from 5.5, TOEFL 71, or TOEIC 750/990 or higher for the English program. For the Chinese-taught program, applicants need TOCFL A2 or HSK 4. The school has two types of entrance scholarships, including full tuition exemption (50,000-72,000 TWD, equivalent to 38-55 million VND per semester) and a monthly allowance of about 6 million VND; 100% tuition exemption for applicants nominated by high schools.

"NTU currently has 108 Vietnamese students, mainly in the fields of Management and Social Sciences," said Ms. Chen.

Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan, a PhD student and assistant to the international cooperation department of NTU, commented that Taiwan wants to attract high-quality human resources in the fields of STEM, Artificial Intelligence and semiconductors, so it has many scholarship policies.

Most schools cover tuition for the first year of university. Some schools have work-study programs to help international students cover living expenses, experience culture, and practice soft skills.

Coming to the study abroad exhibition early, Nguyen Thu Hang and Kieu Gia Bao, students of Thach That High School, wanted to find schools that offer training in semiconductor technology, computer science and artificial intelligence.

The two went to the information desk of National Tsinghua University, the second-ranked university in Taiwan, to ask if these majors were offered at the undergraduate level and what the language requirements were.

"The semiconductor industry only trains from the master's level. If you want to study, you have to start with the material electronics industry first," Hang said, adding that the language of study is English but students need to know Chinese to communicate.

Hang and Bao think the entry requirements are not too difficult. The two students will try to achieve the best GPA to apply for scholarships in the near future.

The Taiwan Study Abroad Exhibition is an annual event. After three consecutive years of being held online due to the pandemic, this year, the event was held in person with the largest number of universities participating in the exhibition ever.
