Medical news on December 3: Vietnam is at risk of having 1.5 million excess men; Risk of stroke when playing pickleball

The gender imbalance at birth will put Vietnam at risk of having a surplus of 1.5 million men by 2034 and increasing to 2.5 million by 2059.

Vietnam is at risk of having a surplus of 1.5 million men.

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Thom, Deputy Director of the Department of Population (Ministry of Health), Vietnam began to experience gender imbalance at birth since 2006 when the sex ratio at birth was 109.8 boys/100 girls.

The gender imbalance at birth will put Vietnam at risk of having a surplus of 1.5 million men by 2034 and increasing to 2.5 million by 2059.

Vietnam has controlled the rate of increase in the sex ratio at birth, but this ratio is still high, from 2012 to now it has always been maintained at over 112 boys/100 girls (112 in 2023). In particular, in some provinces in the Red River Delta, this ratio is up to nearly 120 such as Hung Yen (119.5), Hai Duong (118.3), Quang Ninh (124.4).

According to the Deputy Director of the Department of Population, if the gender imbalance at birth in Vietnam continues to increase and is not controlled, it will leave unpredictable consequences in terms of society, economy, and even political security, such as affecting individuals, families, communities, society, and social norms.

In particular, according to the General Statistics Office, the "surplus of men and lack of women" will have a surplus of 1.5 million men by 2034 and increase to 2.5 million by 2059.

One of the leading causes of gender imbalance at birth is the concept of "preferring sons over daughters", having sons to worship ancestors... has led to gender selection at birth.

To address the gender imbalance at birth, Vietnam applies measures to intervene in the root cause of sex selection at birth, which is the preference for sons, such as: Measures to support and enhance the role and status of women and girls; no gender selection of fetuses in any form.

Severe liver abscess due to the habit of eating raw fish

Information from a general medical facility in Hanoi said that the facility had just saved a man with a severe liver abscess due to the habit of eating raw fish for many years.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with high fever and right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Upon examination, doctors discovered an abscess in the right liver due to E.coli infection with a large size of 7 x 8 cm.

According to Master-Doctor Pham Khac Khiem, Department of Gastroenterology, Tam Anh General Hospital, the treatment process for the patient was difficult because the abscess was located near the diaphragm and was at risk of rupture. The abscess had many walls and thick pus, making it difficult to drain completely in a short time. After 1 month of treatment, the patient's health has recovered and the abscess is healing.

The hospital has treated many patients with liver flukes, but this case is quite rare. If these cases are not treated thoroughly, they can lead to complications such as septic shock, liver damage leading to liver cancer, etc.

The World Health Organization lists liver fluke disease as one of the 20 least-regarded tropical diseases that need to be eliminated.

In Vietnam, this disease is common in 32 provinces and cities, in which localities with high infection rates are Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Hoa Binh, Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen... People often have the habit of eating raw fish salad, dishes made from raw or undercooked fish.

Risk of stroke when playing pickleball

On the evening of December 2, while playing pickleball, a man in Hanoi suddenly collapsed, suspected of having a stroke. The incident occurred at a practice field in Cau Giay District, Hanoi. According to a representative of the Hanoi 115 Emergency Center, immediately after receiving the information, the unit's ambulance approached the scene.

At around 6:10 p.m., the victim played pickleball for 15-20 minutes before suddenly collapsing and losing consciousness. When the emergency team arrived, the victim had stopped circulating. Medical staff had to perform CPR on the spot for 15-20 minutes to restore the patient's pulse before transferring him to E Hospital.

According to doctors, strokes during sports are not uncommon and are completely preventable.

Exercise is a healthy activity that prevents overweight, obesity, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and cancer. On average, a person should exercise 3-5 times a week, each session lasting 30-60 minutes.

According to the amount of exercise (intensity, frequency, duration, nature of the exercise), there are different groups of exercises. Strength training includes weightlifting and throwing exercises. Speed training (fast power) includes running, swimming or cycling at short distances. Endurance training includes running distances from 3 km, marathon, half marathon, sports walking, long-distance cycling.

When exercising or playing sports, people should choose a sport that suits their health condition. Pickleball, like tennis, table tennis, and badminton, is a mixed exercise of strength, speed, and endurance, and is popular with many people.

For some individuals, exercise or playing sports, including pickleball, can be a trigger for sudden death. This risk is more likely to occur in people who have been sedentary or have undetected cardiovascular disease.

Trainees must assess their health status to determine whether they are eligible to participate in training. In addition, they should consult a sports or cardiovascular specialist to assess their body's endurance and physical threshold.

Practitioners need to clearly understand the principles such as practicing with the right technique, gradually increasing the time for the body to adapt, increasing gradually each day, not suddenly increasing the time beyond the body's threshold.

Before exercising, you need to spend time warming up to help your body adapt to high-intensity activities. When you are exerting yourself, you need to avoid stopping suddenly because this can also cause many life-threatening arrhythmias.
