Always move forward

A working day of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien - Director of the National Children's Hospital starts from early morning to late at night. From professional work to operations, management... all require the participation, direction, and orientation of the hospital's leaders. Even at lunch, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien takes the time to eat the meal prepared by his wife and take it to his room before returning to his daily work.

With over 30 years of experience in the field of pediatrics, especially pediatric intensive care, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien has worked in many positions from resident physician, attending physician of the Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Deputy Head of the Department of Surgical Resuscitation, Head of the Department of Surgical Resuscitation, Deputy Director and now Director of the National Children's Hospital. Throughout his long career in the medical field, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien has always been attached to the National Children's Hospital.

During those years of working together, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien and his colleagues have experienced many levels of joy, sadness, anxiety, happiness, failure, success... all of them. Remember the measles epidemic in 2013 - 2014, the epidemic broke out nationwide with the number of cases increasing rapidly every hour, every day. In 2014, the National Children's Hospital (Hanoi) was considered a hotspot for measles, especially the number of children who died reached more than 100 cases. Many cases had strange developments. The main reason was that patients were crowded in one place, leading to cross-infection and hospital infections; treatment quality decreased, and care staff was insufficient. Of the more than 100 deaths, 25 were due to measles, the rest were due to measles combined with other underlying diseases such as pneumonia, respiratory infections, cardiovascular disease, malnutrition...

“At that time, the hospital was like a hot front every hour, every day. Medical staff ate and slept with patients to control the epidemic. All efforts were rewarded when the measles epidemic was successfully controlled, but it also left many consequences and lessons,” Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien recalled.

During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 - 2021, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien directed and worked with hospital staff to participate in and successfully complete the epidemic prevention work right at the hospital and support Ho Chi Minh City, organize the establishment and operation of the COVID-19 Intensive Care Center in Vinh Long province. In 2020 - 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, although the number of medical examinations and treatments decreased, the number of severe and complicated patients transferred from other levels increased, requiring the hospital to focus on both fighting the epidemic and mobilizing all resources for the treatment of these severe and complicated cases. Despite such difficulties, the hospital continued to perform specialized techniques in liver transplants, kidney transplants, open heart surgery, brain lobe surgery for epileptic children, etc. Many new techniques in the paraclinical block were built and implemented.

As the head of the largest specialized treatment facility in the country, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien is always concerned about how to reduce hospital overload and patient mortality. The number of patients coming for medical examination every day is about 3,500 - 4,500, the number of inpatients is about 1,700 - 1,800.

“To meet this great demand, I have proactively arranged and rearranged the outpatient examination area in a reasonable manner according to each specialized group. There are nearly 60 examination rooms in total, arranged into 2 areas for the convenience of patients and their families coming for examination and treatment, organizing early reception from 5am and examination from 7am to handle the number of patients from provinces and cities. Mobilizing experienced doctors and nurses from clinical departments to support the examination rooms during peak hours (9am - 11am) to regulate the number of patients as well as examine and screen patients from the beginning. Completing the outpatient examination process with good coordination between related departments such as finance and information technology to shorten the time for administrative procedures for patients. Opened another high-quality voluntary clinic from the beginning of 2016 with 150 - 180 patients examined/day, meeting people's needs for high-quality medical services, supporting hospital overload reduction as well as bringing economic efficiency", Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien shared.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien has directly directed professional activities in the unit with many good results. Intensive disease treatment has many breakthroughs: Bone marrow transplantation for many different diseases: Thalassemia, congenital immunodeficiency, autologous transplantation for patients with neuroblastoma. Directed the development of resuscitation treatment regimens that were successfully applied to children with hand, foot and mouth disease using NO gas in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension in newborns, ECMO technique for children with acute respiratory failure, malignant whooping cough, malignant measles, circulatory failure after heart surgery...

Every year, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien has chaired hospital-wide consultations for hundreds of difficult and complicated cases, bringing about efficiency, many children are diagnosed more accurately, the treatment method is correct and their lives are saved. In addition to professional work, other functions and tasks that the National Children's Hospital must perform are line management, training and scientific research, international cooperation, hospital management, etc.

Transforming and improving hospital quality associated with comprehensive care

With the view that the quality of medical examination and treatment is still the hospital's top priority, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien and the hospital's leadership team have developed a detailed action plan from the beginning of the working year, proposing practical solutions. Thanks to that, the medical examination and treatment work in each year continues to achieve positive results: Deploying dozens of new techniques, helping to improve the capacity and quality of diagnosis and treatment for patients.

Some notable new techniques include: The technique of placing electroencephalogram electrodes under the dura before epilepsy surgery for drug-resistant epilepsy cases - performed for the first time in Vietnam with the support of American professors from Alabama Children's Hospital; the technique of embolizing neurovascular and peripheral arteriovenous malformations via the vein, performed for the first time in Vietnam in children. This technique helps to completely cure arteriovenous malformations up to 85 - 90% without the need for radiation therapy or surgery, overcoming the disadvantages or recurrence of the technique of embolizing arteriovenous malformations via the artery. Continuing to perform and put into routine use advanced techniques such as 311 cases of blood filtration, 1,088 cases of open heart surgery, 27 cases of stem cell transplantation, 26 cases of organ transplantation with good implementation of synchronous management, good post-transplant treatment monitoring.

Not only taking on the treatment work, the leader, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien, also participates in training and scientific research for many students and postgraduates, participates in scientific research, with many articles published in domestic and foreign medical journals.

As the captain, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Dien must set the goal of developing the National Children's Hospital in the direction of specialization, integration and quality to meet the diverse needs of medical examination and treatment of children in the new situation. Each department, room and center becomes a leading specialized unit in the country, some specialized fields are on par with the region and the world. Continue to build the National Children's Hospital into a specialized hospital at the end of the line, leading the country, develop in the direction of specialization, integration and improve the quality of the hospital associated with comprehensive care, meeting the diverse needs of medical examination and treatment for children in the new situation. Apply 4.0 technology to medical examination and treatment and hospital management.
