The feudal court had a rule that after birth, princes and princesses would not be raised by their biological mothers. They would be cared for by nannies, also known as wet nurses.
Why concubines are not allowed to take care of their biological children?
There are four main reasons for this requirement.
Firstly, in feudal times, only the rich and powerful could hire nannies. Therefore, hiring nannies to take care of their children was a way to show off wealth and abundance.
Second, although wealthy families have the money to provide nutritional supplements for new mothers, not all of them have enough milk to breastfeed their babies. Therefore, they will have to hire a wet nurse to ensure that their babies are well-fed and healthy.
Third, the feudal era was an era of male dominance and female inferiority. A woman’s life depended on her husband. After giving birth, she had to find a way to quickly recover her body so that she could continue to serve her husband, otherwise she would be considered guilty.
For wealthy families with many concubines, this is even more important. If the woman is busy taking care of the children and does not care about her husband, the possibility of her falling out of favor is even higher.

Fourth, the fighting in the palace was even more terrible than in other commoner families. Concubines who gave birth to princes or princesses would have their status elevated and respected much more. If they gave birth to a son, their chances of becoming the mother of the world would be even greater.
Therefore, to prevent political forces from attracting and taking over, the royal court issued a rule that princes and princesses would not follow their biological mothers but would be cared for by private nannies.
The nanny in the palace is very miserable.
According to historical records, during the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Pu Yi had a wet nurse named Wang Xiao. She was born into a very poor peasant family. Because she needed money, Wang Xiao asked to enter the imperial court to be Pu Yi's wet nurse.

To become the wet nurse for the young emperor, Lady Wang Xiao had to follow a series of strict rules. First, she had to eat boiled pig's feet without any seasonings every day. Even if it made her nauseous, she had to eat it to produce enough milk for Pu Yi.
Next, Wang Xiaoshi was absolutely not allowed to see her daughter even though she had just given birth. The reason given by the royal palace was because they were afraid that Wang Xiaoshi would breastfeed her daughter and cause the little emperor to not have enough milk. Later, her daughter died due to lack of breast milk. What was even more inhumane was that the royal court hid the fact that her daughter had died from Wang Xiaoshi because they were afraid that her mental state would be affected and the quality of milk for the emperor would not be guaranteed.
Through the story of Mrs. Vuong Tieu, we can see that being a nanny for a young emperor, prince or princess is not easy but extremely hard. However, Mrs. Vuong Tieu, even though she knows it is hard, still does it because she needs money. Many people are like her, fighting to the point of breaking their heads to make a living.
