Dr. Vo Thi Ngoc Thu, Department of Neurology, Saigon South International General Hospital (HCMC) said that most of us feel comfortable after a good night's sleep and become irritable or upset if we lack sleep. Sleep is very important not only for our physical health but also for our mental health.

Poor or inadequate sleep has been shown to increase negative emotional responses to stressors and decrease positive emotions.

People who lack sleep are at high risk of sudden sleep attacks and difficulty concentrating at work. This is especially dangerous when driving.

What is "white sleep"?

According to Dr. Vo Thi Ngoc Thu, "white sleep" is not an official medical term but is often used to describe insomnia or insufficient sleep.

"White sleep" is a neurological disorder that causes the sufferer to lose control of sleepiness and find it difficult to stay awake when necessary. It often strikes at noon, after driving and having a meal, "stomach muscles tense, eye muscles droop" or maybe in the late afternoon, the body begins to weaken from a tiring day of work. The eyes may still be open, but the body falls into a state of sleep, which may only last for a few seconds, but when driving, it is especially dangerous.

Doctor Vo Thi Ngoc Thu said that it is possible to detect early the risk of falling into a state of "white sleep" through signs such as: Difficulty concentrating, drowsiness, heavy eyelids, frequent yawning, feeling restless or easily agitated.

"The best way to fight sleepiness is to go to sleep, a short nap of about 10-15 minutes will help us be more alert. Chewing gum, playing lively music, coffee, energy drinks... only help create a more comfortable mentality, if used continuously it will only make the body more tired, not good for health", Dr. Thu recommends.

How to help limit "white sleep"

Get enough sleep : If you have to drive a long journey, make sure you get at least 6-7 hours of sleep beforehand to keep your body alert and alert.

Do not drink alcohol or take sleeping pills : The above substances can inhibit the nervous system, making you sleepy. Furthermore, drinking alcohol before driving is strictly prohibited.

Divide the journey, rest more : Do not drive continuously for more than 3 hours. You also need to rest between each stage to take time to recharge, drink water, wash your face, go to the toilet to keep your body in the best condition.

Don’t listen to music that is too “soft” : Listening to music while driving is always a must. However, playing songs that are too melodious and monotonous will make you fall asleep faster.

You should pull over and take a 15-minute nap if you feel like you can't control the car anymore: If sleepiness comes too quickly, don't try to keep going, but park the car in a suitable location and take a nap for about 15 minutes to let your body rest.

In addition, Dr. Thu recommends that if the sleep disorder persists, causing nervous breakdown and potentially many health risks, you should see a doctor immediately. Absolutely do not use sedatives or sleeping pills without a doctor's prescription.
